The Princess Royal, 71, has had her pick of royal residences over the years, all of which are known for their splendour and comfort. The Queen’s only daughter currently resides in Gatcombe Park, a sprawling rural residence shared with her husband Timothy Laurence.
But one of their first homes together was incomparable to the decor and tranquillity of Gatcombe Park.
The royal couple moved to a central London flat in 1992, which was far removed from the opulence the Princess Royal was used to at Buckingham Palace.
Princess Anne, recounting the experience they had at their flat in Drake House on Dolphin Square, described their neighbours as “nosy” with a constant sound of “noisy traffic”.
The pair reportedly paid around £1,300 per month to live in the Westminster flat, but they only stayed for a number of months before heading back to Buckingham Palace.
Details have now emerged of the Dolphin Square flat, showing a bright and thoughtfully-decorated apartment, if unable to show the levels of noise or neighbourly interference that the Princess remembers.
The living room is decorated with soft furnishings, and illuminated by plentiful natural light from sash windows.
A decadent green sofa sits among neutral tones for the walls and the carpets, with a rocking chair placed in the room.
Princess Anne’s bedroom was sparsely furnished, with barely more than a double bed and two side tables in the room.
The dash of colour for the space was provided by a large pink lamp sitting next to the bed.
In the dining room, just a small, two-person table took pride of place, splashed with a bright table cloth.
The open-plan design sweeps from the dining room into the living space.
The kitchen was modest, with white cupboards paired with grey worktops.

Now, on their Gloucestershire estate, Princess Anne’s neighbours are her own children.
Peter Philips, 44, and younger Zara Tindall, 40, live on the sprawling estate with their own families.
The estate came into royal hands during the 1970s, a gift from the Queen to Princess Anne.
It was, for a time, home to the Princess and her former husband, Captain Mark Philips.
They then divorced in 1992, and resided separately on the grounds of the estate for a time.
But when the Princess Royal is in London, she also has a home at the famous St James’s Palace right in the heart of the city.
One of the oldest royal residences, it has a long and illustrious history and is unlikely to be overlooked by “nosy neighbours” or residents deafened by passing cars.
