Anne, the Princess Royal, and Sir Timothy Laurence have arrived at King Charles III’s Coronation along with other senior royals. The King’s sister was spotted looking relaxed as she took her seat in Westminster Abbey this afternoon accompanied by her husband. She has a key role to play in today’s proceedings, but it won’t come until later when the King leaves the Abbey that the world will watch her.

The Princess Royal will serve as Charles’ Gold-Stick-in-Waiting, a crucial role that ensures the monarch’s safety en route to Buckingham Palace.

When the new King and Queen leave the Abbey later this afternoon, they will do so in a golden state carriage.

The Princess will follow behind on horseback, leading 6,000 troops through the streets of London.

The role is ceremonial, reserved only for state occasions, and held jointly by the Colonels of the Life Guards (LG) and the Blues and Royals (RHG/D).

Both regiments hail from the Household Cavalry of the Household Division.

A royal source told the Daily Mirror that the King personally asked his sister to take on the role and that she was “incredibly honoured” to accept it.

They said the King’s decision-making was “clear for all to see”, and that he was “rewarding the Princess Royal for her loyalty and her unwavering devotion to duty above all else.”

They added: “The King values his sister as a trusted lieutenant and this is the perfect example of such a relationship.”
