Prince William’s reported method for handling the media has “reinforced” what Prince Harry has claimed, according to royal commentators. The Duke of Cambridge had been the subject on an intimate portrait in The Sunday Times, in which friends and sources came forward to speak on his behalf. Us Weekly’s Royally Us podcast discussed how some of the insight mirrored what the Duke of Sussex had said in his interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Host Christina Garibaldi told listeners: “It was interesting to me how they said that [William’s] stance on the media has shifted too.

“Obviously we know that they hated the media for so long because of what happened with Diana.

“But now he almost sees it as a way that he can play the media a little bit.

“Which is what Harry kind of echoed in his tell-all interview with CBS.”

Co-host Molly Mulshine added: “Yes it was kind of interesting that they would reinforce what Harry said.

“I wouldn’t have expected that.

“I would have thought that they would have maybe said that he doesn’t try to play the media, or that kind of thing.

“So that was an interesting thing to learn.”

In his Oprah interview, Harry had opened up about the Royal Family’s relationship with the British media.

He said: “I am acutely aware of where my family stand and how scared they are of the tabloids turning on them.

“There is what’s termed or referred to as the ‘invisible contract’ behind closed doors between the institution and the tabloids, the UK tabloids.”

The Duke continued: “To simplify it, it’s a case of if you as a family member are willing to wine, dine and give full access to these reporters, then you will get better press.

“I think everyone needs to have some compassion for them in that situation, right?

“There is a level of control by fear that has existed for generations. I mean, generations.

“The institution survives based on that [public] perception.”

When Oprah asked if the relationship was “symbiotic”, “living and thriving because the other exists”, Harry agreed.
