William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, led a royal reception with world leaders at the COP26 summit last night. The couple donned blue outfits as they hosted a reception for the Earthshot Prize Awards. They were joined at the event by Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Guests paused at 7:30pm to watch a pre-recorded message from the Queen, as she addressed world leaders from Windsor Castle after being advised to stay home.

She paid tribute to her late husband, Prince Philip, and to Charles and William for the work they have done and continue to do to protect the planet.

William and Kate have just returned from a half-term holiday with their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The Duke of Cambridge is widely known to favour his privacy.

Royal commentator Dr Ed Owens claimed to Express.co.uk this is one of the reasons why he went to the University of St Andrew’s, and likewise the family’s move to Anmer Hall should be interpreted in that respect.

William, 39, is a big motorbike enthusiast — and, according to a royal photographer, used to use his motorbike to get away from the press.

The Duke himself admitted the helmet helps him maintain anonymity when he is driving around.

William’s enthusiasm was such that he even went for a spin around the streets of London on the eve of his wedding in April 2011.

He also took part in a gruelling rally across South Africa with younger brother Prince Harry in 2008 to raise money for numerous charities.

Asked about his love of bikes in the past, he said: “I don’t know what it is about bikes, but I’ve always had a passion for motorbikes ever since I was very small.

“I used to do a lot of go-karting when I was younger and then after that I went on to quadbikes and eventually motorbikes.”

He added: “It does help being anonymous with my motorcycle helmet on because it does enable me to relax, but I just enjoy everything about motorbikes and the camaraderie that comes with it.”

Royal photographer James Whittaker told the 2005 documentary ‘Chasing the Royals’ that William’s hobby didn’t go down particularly well within Buckingham Palace.

He said: “I think it frightens the life out of people at Buckingham Palace and almost certainly, the Queen too.

“It is a strange thing. His mother was constantly fleeing from the paparazzi, who were on motorbikes.

“Now her son is using a motorbike for the same sort of reasons.”

Kate too admitted she didn’t like William going out on his bike.

She said in 2015: “I’m terrified.

“Hopefully, I’m going to keep George off it.”

On a visit to the Isle of Man for the TT race in 2018, William said he had knocked his hobby on the head.

He said: “I’m a father of three, I have to tone it down.

“I miss the big trips, for me biking was always about being with everybody else.”

Both William and Harry are motorbike enthusiasts. Harry “hugely enjoyed” riding his bike, wrote Angela Levin in her 2018 book ‘Harry: Conversations with the Prince’.

She wrote: “He once spontaneously decided to ride at speed to Kent to eat fish and chips by the seaside.

“As he neared Canterbury, he and his two plain clothes protection officers were pulled over by two local policemen who had registered that they exceeded the speed limit.

“The protection officers showed their Metropolitan Police badges but the local police were determined to press charges.

“Then Harry lifted his visor and smiled at the police.

“His magic ability of making strangers instantly warm to him did not let him down and the officers decided that on this occasion a verbal warning was all that was needed.”

Both brothers have kept sport very close to their hearts throughout their lives.

William is President of the English Football Association, while Harry founded the Invictus Games, a sporting event for ex-service personnel.
