The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, both 39, attendied the Together At Christmas community carol service yesterday. The charity fundraiser will bring together members of the Royal Family as well as some of the biggest names in entertainment. ITV will broadcast the festivities on Christmas Eve after the Cambridges were reported to have shelved plans for the BBC to show the Westminster Abbey event.

It comes after Kate, William and other royals hit out at the corporation over its controversial recent documentary, ‘The Princes and the Press’, which examined the relationship between the media and royalty.

Kate and William’s solid representation of the Royal Family at events like their Christmas concert has become commonplace over the years.

After a nervous start to royal life, the Duchess of Cambridge has proven she is able to confidently share the limelight with William.

However, when the couple first met, things did not go as planned for William, who had a “terrible” moment with his future wife.

While every inch the assured future King these days, the Duke was reported to have stumbled as he became acquainted with Kate.

Tom Quinn, author of ‘Kensington Palace: An Intimate Memoir’, recalled the awkward encounter in a throwback interview.

The expert was speaking for the Channel 5 documentary, ‘William & Kate: Too Good To Be True’, which was released last year.

Mr Quinn explained how William and Kate met each other during their studies at the University of St Andrews.

He said: “One of the funny stories is that he was so desperate to meet her that as he walked towards her, he apparently tripped”.

The author also claimed William said to Kate: “Oh, that’s a terrible start. You’re going to think I’m a complete clot.”

The documentary draws on the expertise of a string of royal authors, commentators, and journalists as it examines William and Kate’s relationship.

William is second-in-line to the throne after Prince Charles, and Kate will one day be his Queen Consort.

The Cambridges tied the knot in 2011 after initially meeting during their first year of university a decade earlier.

The couple, who have three children together, were flatmates in their second year of university before their romance blossomed.

The Channel 5 documentary also contrasts William’s privileged upbringing to Kate’s more humble background.

Her parents Carole and Michael Middleton are self-made millionaires with their business Party Pieces, and both previously worked for British Airways.

Kate’s stable, close-knit family background has been beneficial to William and the monarchy, according to Mr Quinn.

He told the documentary: “It’s produced, in Kate, a woman who is very level.

“She’s interested in other people, which I think is at the moment in the modern world probably the perfect background for being the Queen.”

He added: “Especially when her husband, the future King, has such a different upbringing, a damaged upbringing.

“And so, what William lacks is made up for by Kate.”
