Prince William’s ‘sharp look’ at Royal Variety after ‘inappropriate comment’ about Kate
Prince Charles and William succeeding Queen discussed by Smith
Comedian and actor Jack Whitehall has hosted the annual gala several times and one year the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were sitting in the royal box. The Fresh meat star thought it would be a good time to bring up the fact that he and Kate both attended the same exclusive private school Marlborough College. As Kate is six years older, they never spoke while they were at school but he claimed in his monologue that the Duchess was his “first crush”.
However, Jack went on to say that William was giving him a look that suggested his comment was inappropriate.
He said: “We were actually at school together. This is true. We were at the same school.
“I was a bit younger than you, but this is the first time I’ve seen you since school, so hello.
“I don’t know whether it’s appropriate given the circumstances but you were probably my first ever crush.

“Okay, definitely inappropriate. Your Highness is giving me a sharp look.”
Jack later admitted on a talk show that this resulted in an awkward conversation with Prince William after the 2014 event.
He met the Duke in the traditional line-up where the royals meet everyone involved in the show.
He explained on The Jonathan Ross Show that when William reached him he made a “passive-aggressive” comment about his “flirting” with his wife on stage.
Jack joked: “I flirted a little because I said she was one of my first crushes at school.
“And then in the line-up William came over and he was very funny.
“Because he was very nice, but very passive-aggressive, ‘Oh so you were flirting with my missus? Oh no, no, that very, very funny’.
“That’s him going, ‘I could have you beheaded’.”

He also told chat show host Jonathon Ross that, despite branding Kate as “the one that got away”, he had never really had a chance with her.
Jack exclaimed: “She was in sixth form ‒ it was never going to happen, I was in a head brace!”
He also described an awkward misunderstanding with American singer Demi Lovato while in the line up after the Royal Variety Performance that year.
Demi asked him what the protocol was with the “baby bump” as Kate had been pregnant with Princess Charlotte at the time.
Jack said he joked: “The Duchess of Cambridge, I think, would be offended if you don’t have a little feel.”
However, he claimed Demi did not understand his sarcastic British humour and instead took this comment “at face value”.
Jack said: “As Kate Middleton’s coming along the line, I suddenly realise that we’ve got a situation where either I need to step in and tell her and look like a complete d*** or potentially Demi Lovato from Frozen is about to get taken out by a police marksman.”
This is not the first time Jack has made cheeky jokes about the Royal Family, as he was part of the Royal Variety Show in 2010 as well.
That year, Prince Charles and Camilla were in attendance and Jack noted that the royals were considering selling some land to help out the country in times of austerity.
He said: “Even the Royal Family are doing their bit, aren’t they?
“Last year, I watched the Queen’s speech, I watch it every year, and in it the Queen said that even the Royal Family, ‘we’re making some really big cuts this year and we’re even considering selling some land’.
“I thought this was a brilliant gesture.
“I also thought, though, someone really needs to tell the Queen about Cash for Gold. Sorted! Kerching!”
