Prince William has been given a cruel nickname by Vladimir Putin as the future King made an unexpected visit to the Polish-Ukrainian border this week. The Russian leader’s foreign ministry belittled the prince as merely being the “son of Charles”, and have tried to use the opportunity to heighten tensions with the West, however the prince has been welcomed warmly on his trip by both Polish and Ukrainian supporters.

During his trip, William praised British and Polish troops for “defending our freedoms”, which the Russian foreign ministry’s press director Maria Zakharova hit back at.

She used Russian-style naming customs to mock the prince while referencing the UK supplying Ukraine with uranium shells for Challenger 2 tanks.

She said: “I wonder if William Charles-ovich brought depleted uranium ammunition for his troops.”

While in the Polish capital Warsaw, William was greeted with cheers and crowds of royal well-wishers, even posing for pictures with some.

He also visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier where he laid a wreath with the handwritten note: “In memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

During his trip to the Eastern European nation he had a “warm and friendly” meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda, who will be at the King’s Coronation in May.

William’s visit to Rzeszow in the south east of the country to meet with British soldiers was kept secret until he had already left and arrived in Warsaw due to the security risk.

He told the gathered troops: “Thank you for all you are doing out here.”

He said he wanted to thank them in person for “keeping everyone safe” and “keeping an eye on what’s going on.

“So, just a big thank you for what you do on a day-to-day basis.

“You’re doing a really important job out here and defending our freedoms is really important, and everyone back home thoroughly supports you.”

Upon his arrival in Warsaw the prince said: “It’s fantastic to be back in Poland.

“Our nations have strong ties. Through our co-operation in support of the people of Ukraine and their freedom, which are also our freedoms and yours, these ties are further strengthened.

“I’m here because I want to personally thank the Polish and British troops working in close and crucial partnership.

“I also want to pay tribute to the inspiring humanity of the Polish people. You have opened your hearts as much as your homes.”

King Charles himself has said he wants to visit Ukraine again “before I get too old”.

Speaking as he officially opened the new European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Headquarters, the monarch said: “I must go again before I get too old. I would like the chance to see Ukraine again.”
