The Duke of Cambridge, 39, was among the members of the Royal Family to participate in remembrance events last weekend. William, Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Prince Edward all laid wreaths at the Cenotaph in central London on Sunday to honour those who have died in conflict. William’s grandmother, the Queen, was not present at the Remembrance commemoration because she had sprained her back.

Britain’s longest-serving monarch had been resting for two weeks on the advice of doctors after a busy schedule of events.

However, it had been reported that it was the “firm intention” of the 95-year-old Sovereign to attend the event.

Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, who William married in 2011, was present for the event.

Dressed in black, she watched from a balcony of the Foreign Office, alongside Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall and Sophie, the Countess of Wessex.

Relationship expert Neil Wilkie has analysed the bond between Kate and William over the last decade for Express.co.uk.

He said: “He lost his mother at an early age, often there’s a subconscious fear, if I have somebody else who loves me, are they going to leave me?

“Are they going to die on me? Are they going to walk out on me? And that often will hold people back from making a true commitment.”

William and Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

The two brothers came together to unveil a statue of the late Princess of Wales in her former home of Kensington Palace in July.

The pair revealed the work in the Palace’s newly updated Sunken Garden for what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday.

Mr Wilkie spoke about the lasting impact of Diana’s death on William, as well as the pressures that may have been placed on Kate during the early stages of their relationship.

He said: “The difficulty is that any girlfriend he had was under the media spotlight.

“There were questions, is she the right one for him? Is she the right one to be the future Queen?

“That’s a hell of a pressure on any girlfriend but there’s also a lot of pressure on William: ‘Am I making the right choice?’”

Before tying the knot in 2011, Kate and William broke up for a short period in 2007.

However, the couple were soon reunited and later said their time apart had made them stronger as a couple.

Mr Wilkie claimed that during this period William was under a lot of pressure over his choice of girlfriend.

He said: “‘Am I making a choice which will be right for me but also right for the millions of people who are watching what’s going on in my life?’

“It’s much easier in that situation to avoid commitment and just carry on looking and hope that you’re going to meet the perfect person.

“And the reality is, nobody is a perfect person and circumstances change.”
