Penny Junor, a royal biographer of both Prince William and Harry, spoke following the bombshell interview. Speaking to PEOPLE, Ms Junor said: “William is very protective of Kate and can get very angry.

The comments come amid claims Prince William is concerned that private conversations with Harry will be made public and “plastered over American TV.”

Buckingham Palace is believed to have echoed the claims after a royal source told The Daily Mail that no member of the senior royals “will be giving a running commentary on private conversations.”

During the interview, Meghan spoke about reports in which she made Kate cry over bridesmaid dress arrangements for the Sussexes’ wedding.

The Duchess of Sussex offered a separate description of events, suggesting “the reverse happened”, with Meghan left in tears.

Subsequent stories have suggested both royals may have been left in tears as a result of the incident, around the date of her wedding to Harry.

Meghan said during the interview that Kate later apologised.

“I don’t say that to be disparaging to anyone, because it was a really hard week of the wedding, and she was upset about something,” said Meghan.

“But she owned it, and she apologized and she brought me flowers and a note apologizing.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s interview with US chat show legend Oprah Winfrey was broadcast in America and the UK.

The highly anticipated programme was watched by a peak audience of 12.4 million viewers in the UK, according to ITV.

In response to the explosive claims made by Meghan and Harry during the Oprah interview, Buckingham Palace said the Royal Family is “saddened”.

The Palace statement read: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
