Prince William felt he had “lost” his brother after Prince Harry took part in the Sussexes explosive Oprah Winfrey interview, claimed a royal expert. The allegations made in the interview left the Duke of Cambridge “furious”, particularly after private conversations amongst Royal Family members made headlines around the world.

Royal reporter Rupert Bell told talkRadio: “The only thing we’ve had is William when it broke who said ‘we’re not a racist family’ when he said off-mic, but you could clearly see his frustration and anger.

“He knows he can’t say anything in these circumstances, but I’m pretty sure he was furious.

“I think he felt very frustrated by the way Meghan is controlling Harry’s life and he feels he has lost his brother, in every sense and that must be painful.”

Host Julia Hartley-Brewer continued: “And indeed, a lot of us would feel if one of our family members, you had a private conversation and that ends up going around your friendship group or the school gate or something, you’d be very upset.

“The fact that it ends up on virtually every single international newspaper and is the subject of TV interviews is far, far worse.”

Rumours of a rift between the brothers began to circulate in the autumn of 2018, after the Sussexes returned from their South Pacific tour.

Shortly afterwards, the ‘Fab Four’ as they were known decided to split their royal households, and Harry and Meghan moved out of Kensington Palace to Frogmore Cottage.

Speculation that a dispute had occurred between Meghan and Kate also made its way into the press, with sources saying that the Duchess of Cambridge had been left in tears after a flower girl dress fitting before the royal wedding in 2018.

Prince Harry and Meghan then announced in January 2020 that they would be stepping down from their roles as senior royals.

After relocating to California, the Sussexes agreed to give a tell-all interview to Oprah Winfrey, where they disclosed intimate details about their rift with the Royal Family.

Prince Harry characterised his relationship with William as “space” and said they were “on different paths”.

He also said he felt “really let down” by his father, and claimed that both Prince Charles and Prince William were “trapped” within the institution.

Meghan Markle spoke of her rumoured dispute with Kate and revealed that the opposite had occurred and that it was Kate who had left her in tears.

Other allegations included Palace aides refusing to correct damaging tabloid articles, the Royal Family denying their son a title, and ignoring Meghan’s mental health.

However, the most damaging claim was the unnamed senior member of the family had made a racist remark about the skin colour of their son.

This caused a PR crisis for Buckingham Palace and caused Prince William to respond “We are very much not a racist family” when questioned by reporters.

Since the interview aired on March 7, the brothers have come into contact on two occasions and have displayed a sense of unity.

For the funeral of Prince Philip on April 17, they walked together behind the hearse and unveiled Diana’s new statue together on July 1.

However, royal sources say that reconciliatory talks behind closed doors have been unproductive and the relationship between the brothers remains strained.
