Prince William is trying to convince Zara Tindall, the daughter of the Princess Royal, to step up in the wake of Megxit, an insider has claimed. The source said the Duke, who is second in line to the throne, is acutely aware the pool of senior royals is shrinking and he will need other family members to carry out public engagements in the future.

A source told New Idea, an Australian weekly magazine: “William is acutely aware that his own father has three siblings – well, two now that Prince Andrew has been stood down – to help shoulder the load of public engagements.

“But when Wills is Prince of Wales, he can no longer count on Prince Harry.

“In the meantime, he’s trying his darnedest to convince Zara Tindall to help him out.”

The source added: “Wills thinks Zara could be just the tonic to help solve his ‘staffing’ problem in the years to come – now he just has to convince her of that.”

Princess Anne decided not to give her two children, Peter and Zara, royal titles.

Though they were not entitled to receive HRH titles, due to rules stating only the offspring of male royal heirs can inherit titles, the Queen did offer to make an exception.

However, the Princess Royal turned this down in a bid to allow them to lead more normal lives.

In 2015, Zara appeared grateful for this decision, and said: “I’m very lucky that both my parents decided to not use the title and we grew up and did all the things that gave us the opportunity to do.”

Former Buckingham Palace press secretary Dickie Arbiter also hailed the decision as a “masterstroke”.

He said: “It was a masterstroke of the Princess Royal when she decided not to give her children titles.

“Growing up as a commoner allowed Zara to thrive as her own woman, and there has never been pressure on her to conform.

“She has benefited from it in all sorts of ways.”

Zara is currently 19th-in-line to the throne, and will soon become 20th after the birth of Meghan and Harry’s second child, who is due in the summer.

She is the second child of Princess Anne and successfully forged a career as an equestrian, following in the footsteps of her mother.

Zara competed in the Olympics and won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics, held in London.

She remains a non-working member of the Royal Family, alongside her brother, Peter.

Zara married fellow sportsman Mike Tindall in July 2011.

The couple has three children together, welcoming their most recent baby in March this year.

They named the boy Lucas Philip Tindall, who joins older sisters Mia, seven, and Lena, two.

The youngsters are 20th, 21st and 22nd in the line of succession.
