The Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, posed for a portrait alongside King Charles III and Camilla Parker Bowles this week as the royals prepare for a new chapter. Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in September has led to a number of changes within the Firm. Not only is Charles King, but William and Kate took on the Wales and Cornwall titles. It also sees William become heir apparent and his son Prince George second-in-line to the throne.

Royal expert Robert Lacey once wrote about the moment William told his son he would one day be King. In his book titled Battle of Brothers, Mr Lacey explains that William’s “unhappiness at the haphazard fashion in which the whole business of his royal destiny had buzzed around his head from the start” inspired his decision.

The Prince of Wales wanted to tell Prince George what his future will look like in a “controlled moment of their choice”.

Mr Lacey added: “William has not revealed to the world how and when he broke the big news to his son.

“Maybe one day George will tell us the story himself. But sometime around the boy’s seventh birthday in the summer of 2020 it is thought that his parents went into more detail about what the little prince’s life of future royal ‘service and duty’ would particularly involve.”

George may be the future King, but William and Kate have tried to give him and their other children as normal a childhood as possible.

Dunacan Larcombe, a royal expert, once told OK!: . “George is only just beginning to understand his destiny, but Kate has got the journey planned.”

Mr Larcombe added, “That really struck me after seeing George in his first grown-up suit with his parents at the Euros final in July.

“People were asking why they hadn’t let him wear an England shirt ‘like a normal eight-year-old’. William was apparently keen on the idea, but it was Kate, the former commoner, who said no.

“She was showing George that being ‘on duty’ requires a different approach… he has to learn to don the royal armour.”

A moment that was reported recently showed that George may not have as many reservations about becoming monarch as some other royals have in the past.

According to a report, while Prince George was playing with his school friends, he told them: “My dad will be king so you better watch out”.

Katie Nicholl, a royal expert, wrote about the incident in her book The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown.

She wrote: “George understands he will one day be king and as a little boy sparred with friends at school, outdoing his peers with the killer line.”

Back in 2016, William was asked what he thought about becoming King one day by the BBC. He responded: “I certainly don’t lie awake at night waiting or hoping for it, because it sadly means my family has moved on, and I don’t want that.”

In 2017, Prince Harry echoed this view. He said: “Is there anyone of the Royal Family who wants to be king or queen? I don’t think so.”
