In recent weeks, Queen Elizabeth II has cancelled numerous engagements and appearances owing to ill-health. The 95-year-old monarch most recently pulled out of appearing at a Remembrance Sunday service just hours before her scheduled appearance, due to spraining her back.
While Her Majesty has been ordered to rest by her doctors, other members of the Royal Family have stepped up in her absence.
These included her eldest son, and heir to the throne, Prince Charles, who recently celebrated his 73rd birthday.
The Prince of Wales filled in for Her Majesty at Whitehall’s Remembrance Sunday service and laid a wreath on her behalf.
This is not the first instance that he has filled in though, as Charles has been taking on additional duties in place of his mother, going on almost a decade now.
When the Prince eventually takes the throne, he could have a “trusty sidekick” in his eldest son William, a royal commentator has claimed.
Royal historian Dr Ed Owens also pointed out that despite the step away from royal duties undertaken by Prince Harry, 37, last year, the popularity Royal Family will still continue onwards due to the public image of William, his wife Kate and their three children.
He went on to explain that while Charles may not be the most popular of leaders, the Royal Family is given a significant boost due to the popularity of his son’s family.
He claims the Cambridges popularity is owed to their image as an “idyllic family”.
A survey conducted by YouGov, showed that the Prince of Wales has approval ratings of just 45 percent.
The poll highlighted that his son William had a considerably higher approval rating of 62 percent, which could see him as an asset to Charles when he leads the country.
Dr Owens told Express.co.uk: “Yes one son has gone. One, if you like, trusted lieutenant has departed and does not seem interested in supporting his father, as was originally the plan.
“But in William, Charles does have a trusty sidekick, and so long as the Cambridges are popular and maintain their public image as this idyllic family group, I do not see a moment of crisis on the horizon.”

According to Dr Owens, the process to hand things over to Charles has been ongoing over a long period of time.
Over the last two to three years, and more recently due to her ill health, Charles has overseen more of the day-to-day business of the monarchy.
Dr Owens said we see him involved in “things like investiture at Buckingham Palace and the handing out of honours and awards.”
He said: “Equally, he is involved in other public engagements previously overseen by his mother.”
The royal historian, who is also an honorary research associate at the Centre for the Study of Modern Monarchy at Royal Holloway University, also noted that Charles will be the successor of the Queen in other remits too.
He said: “In 2018, at the Commonwealth Head of Government’s meeting, he was officially given the thumbs up to succeed her as the next Head of the Commonwealth.
“She had to speak to the different heads of Government from the Commonwealth about that, but she has essentially lined him up so there is continuity in that geopolitical context as well.”
He added: “I think the process of continuation is already underway.
“I think they’ve spent a lot of time as of late emphasising transition and re-orientating the symbolic role of monarchy around the future king.”
