Prince William had a meal at an LGBTQ+ restaurant last night, a move which was seen by a local as a “valuable” gesture of support for the community amid the crackdown on its rights it is experiencing in Poland. The Prince of Wales amazed fellow diners as he was spotted at the Butero Bistro in Warsaw.

Pictures taken by a local show the royal sitting around a table with a few members of his staff. William can be seen placing the order while speaking to a waiter.

The amateur photographer added while sharing the pictures: “Warsaw can surprise. I ate dinner today with the prince”.

They also joked William was “wondering what to order”, before adding “the service here is great and helped”.

The lucky diner continued: “It is valuable that he supported the community so abused by the current authorities in Poland.”

The Polish Government has been criticised by the European Union and campaigners, including the Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, in recent years for taking a series of moves seen as attacks against civil society groups, activists, women’s rights and LGBTQ rights.

ILGA-Europe placed Poland last in a chart released last year which ranked 49 European countries based on the LGBTQ+ rights each of them granted.

The bistro, located in the centre of Warsaw, advertises itself as “your queerspace with comfort food” and used the colours of the rainbow – which has been adopted by the LGBTQ+ community as its flag – on its logo.

As he opened the restaurant in November last year, its owner Paweł Zasim said that the restaurant “is an inclusive space where everyone can feel good.”

He said: “You look into a specific courtyard, to a place under a specific neon sign. You know what you’re signing up for and either you’re in it or you’re not.”

Speaking about the royal’s evening out, a source told the MailOnline the prince had asked if he could join his Kensington Palace staff for dinner at a local restaurant.

They added: “The team from Kensington Palace booked a local restaurant near where they were working and the prince decided to join them.

“He asked them what they were doing and then asked to come along. It was a great night by all accounts.

“The team really appreciated him asking to join them.”
