The boxer won the medal in the women’s middleweight final against China’s Li Qian at Tokyo 2020. Following her victory, the Duke of Cambridge took to Twitter to personally congratulate Lauren, who was raised in Ystrad Mynach, Glamorgan, by her grandparents, Derek and Linda.

William, who interviewed the 27-year-old from Wales in the run-up to the Games, said: “Congratulations @LLPrice94 on winning Olympic Boxing gold.

“It was fantastic to hear your story in person ahead of #Tokyo2020.

“I know your nan Linda and the whole of Ystrad Mynach will be so proud of your incredible achievement, as are we! W.”

The post prompted a string of comments from other Twitter users.

One said: “I just saw this and remembered she was the one Prince William chatted with….how wonderful that she won GOLD!!!!!”

Another added: “You were a great interviewer W!”

In July, Lauren told William in an interview for BBC Sport that boxing gold at the Olympics would “top everything” in her career.

The boxer, who made more than 50 appearances for Wales Women’s national football team and won senior world and European kickboxing titles before focusing on her Olympic dream, said: “The Olympics mean the world to me and if I was to go and win a gold medal it would top everything in my career.

“I remember being sat in the living room with my Nan and Grandad watching the Olympics and seeing Kelly Holmes win gold, and at the time I didn’t know what sport I wanted to do, I just wanted to go to the Olympic Games.”

Nan Linda told the BBC: “Lauren said she wanted to be a world champion kick boxer, play football for Wales and go to the Olympics and the teacher laughed. I said, ‘you should never try and shatter their dreams.’

“It’s just sad that her grandfather’s not here to see it because he would have been the proudest man in the valley.”

After her win, Lauren – was inspired by watching Dame Kelly Holmes storm to victory in both the women’s 800 metres and 1500m at Athens 2004 – dedicated her gold medal to her grandparents.

She said: “It’s just a dream come true. It’s been a dream of mine since I watched Kelly Holmes win that gold. I didn’t know how I was going to get it and what sport I was going to do it in.

“I can’t really put into words what it means to me. I’m just over the moon.

“When the decision came, I looked up to (Derek), he was a massive part of my life and if it wasn’t for him and my nan I wouldn’t have achieved anything.

“They’ve always supported me 100 per cent and I always said I’d win an Olympic medal and speaking to my nan before I came out here, I said I was going to get that gold and bring it back to her.

“I can’t thank them enough, they’ve always encouraged me and spent thousands of pounds on me over the years to send me away to tournaments.

“This is for them. I can’t wait to get back now, see her and share this medal with her.”
