Mr Gates, the founder of Microsoft, is currently the fourth richest man in the world. He has donated $1.75billion (£1.27billion) to fighting coronavirus since the pandemic began via the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

According to Richard Eden, the Daily Mail’s Saturday Diary Editor, William has been becoming increasingly close to the US tech mogul.

Writing for the paper he said: “Prince William is enjoying a blossoming friendship with Bill Gates.

“I hear the Duke of Cambridge held a meeting via video link with the US billionaire on Tuesday, their third such pow-wow in the space of three years.

“No doubt, generous philanthropist Bill could be persuaded to dip into his £99bn fortune to support William and Kate’s Royal Foundation.

“As long as Prince Harry and Meghan don’t get to him first!”

The Royal Family was rocked by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this month.

Meghan revealed she’d experienced mental health problems, including suicidal thoughts, since marrying into the Royal Family in 2018.

She also alleged “concerns and conversations” were raised about Archie’s skin tone prior to his birth.

In response William was forced to deny the Royal Family is racist whilst visiting a school in Stratford.

Addressing reporters he said: “We’re very much not a racist family.”

Buckingham Palace released a statement on behalf of the Queen expressing regret for Meghan’s difficulties.

It vowed the issues raised by the Sussexes would be deal with “privately” within the family.

However the statement noted “some recollections may vary” about the events outlined by the Duke and Duchess.

During a recent interview with Polish publications Gazeta Wyborcza and TVN24 Mr Gates said it could take until 2022 for pre-pandemic life to be fully restored.

After describing the pandemic as “an incredible tragedy” he commented: “By the end of 2022 we should be basically completely back to normal.”

Earlier this month Mr Gates participated in an “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit during which he discussed future threats to humanity.

When asked what the “best scenario” would be if we fail to fight climate change he replied: “It gets worse over time and natural ecosystems go away.

“The migration away from the unliveable areas around the equator will be massive.

“We won’t be able to support a large population if it gets a lot warmer.”

Another Reddit user asked Mr Gates whether he thinks humans can build a zero emissions society by 2060.

He said: “It really depends on whether the younger generation worldwide adopts this as a moral cause they force us to pay attention to.

“If they do then I would say 75% chance of success.

“If there isn’t that push then the investments may not get made.”
