The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s public profile increased in the past 18 months after older members of the Royal Family were forced to withdraw from many public engagements due to the coronavirus pandemic. Prince William even became the first royal to speak out publicly about COVID-19, as he claimed Britain is at its best when faced with a crisis. William, who is second-in-line to the throne, and his wife Kate are among the more popular members of the Royal Family and have always been considered vital in ensuring the monarchy remains relevant to younger generations.

William and Kate celebrated their ten-year wedding anniversary on April 29 of this year.

The couple were engaged in 2010 after an eight-year courtship but split for a few months in April 2007.

William, who experienced his parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s tumultuous divorce and the subsequent death of his mother, soon returned to Kate after missing her happy home life in Berkshire and loving parents Carole and Michael, according to Princess Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton.

Speaking on Amazon Prime documentary, William and Kate: Into the Future, Mr Morton said: “For a kid from a broken home which is after all what William is, he has always yearned towards the stable and towards the steady.

“It’s not just Kate he’s in love with – it’s the family.”

William’s parents Diana and Charles’ marriage was affected by incompatibility and extramarital affairs.

The couple separated in 1992 after the breakdown of their relationship became known to the public and the marriage ultimately ended in divorce in 1996, a year before the death of Diana in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997.

Royal author and journalist Richard Kay added: “Everything about William you can trace back to what happened to his parents.

“He lived through the bitter break up of their marriage.

“He knows that what happened to them destroyed their marriage and he is very careful not to make the same mistakes.”

William’s relationship with his in-laws has grown from strength to strength since tying the knot with Kate, joining them on skiing trips and group holidays in Mustique.

The Duke of Cambridge was always welcomed by his second family while he is thought to have asked the Queen to invite Michael and Carole to the carriage parade at Ascot and the Thames boat pageant for the sovereign’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Speaking in 2011, William said: “She [Kate] has got a very close family.

“I got on very well with them and I’m lucky they have been so supportive.

“Mike and Carole have been loving and caring and really fun and have been welcoming towards me, so I have felt really part of the family.”

A stable, loving home, inspired by the Middleton upbringing is something William hopes to offer his three children, George,7, Charlotte, 6, and Louis, 3.

The Duke told GQ in 2017 that he hoped his children could experience a normal life despite them being part of the Royal Family.

William said: “I want to bring up my children in a happy, stable, secure world and that is so important to both of us as parents.

“I want George to grow up in a real, living environment.

“I don’t want him growing up behind palace walls, he has to be out there.

“Stability at home is so important to me.”
