Prince William has been the target of criticism from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle supporters online, according to a royal expert. This comes after the Duke of Cambridge joined a football social media boycott last weekend over abuse. HeirPod host and ABC royal contributor Omid Scobie said that “some people online are questioning” why William spoke up about football and not his brother.

The four-day boycott, which began at 3pm last Friday, and ended at midnight on Monday, served as a protest to the growing racist abuse football players have experienced recently.

Mr Scobie told HeirPod: “This was led by some of the biggest football players in the world all taking a stand against online abuse.

“It will be interesting to see if he continues with this work.”

ABC News producer Zoe Magee added: “I think he will. It is a subject that his brother and sister-in-law feel very passionate about and have been doing a lot of campaigning on as well.”

Mr Scobie continued: “Some people have been commenting online, questioning why the Duke of Cambridge had been silent when Harry and Meghan faced their own issues online.

“We will never know the answer to this, but it’s something that will keep coming up as long as William talks about this.”

Ms Magee disputed this, saying: “I will say that there was an investigation by Kensington Palace a few years ago.

“They worked with the social media companies because there had been so much abuse of the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge and pitting those two women against each other.

“Some of the comments were horrendous. So he is probably feeling protective of his wife as well.”

Last week, the Duke of Cambridge tweeted: “As President of the FA I join the entire football community in the social media boycott this weekend. W.”

William has been an avid football fan for tears, and has often proudly spoken about his love for Aston Villa.

Many players, clubs and broadcasters also joined the boycott to say online abuse is not acceptable.

In January, the Duke of Cambridge hit out at racist abuse in football.

He described it as “despicable” and saying it “must stop” after several black players were targeted online.

William wrote that everyone has “a responsibility to create an environment where such abuse is not tolerated, and those who choose to spread hate and division are held accountable for their actions”.
