The Royal Family was hit with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bombshell interview this week. Sitting down with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey, the pair set-out several allegations against the Firm. The Queen has since released a statement and said the issues discussed in the interview be dealt with “privately” by the Royal Family.
During the interview, Harry admitted that he was scared history was repeating itself in what was largely interpreted as a reference to his late mother, Princess Diana, and her struggles within the Royal Family.
He said: “I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side.
“Because I can’t imagine what it must have been like for her [Diana], going through this process by herself all those years ago.
“It’s been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we had each other.”
Diana sadly passed away in a car accident in Paris in 1997, two years after her tell-all interview with Martin Bashir.
It was here that she offered in gruelling detail her tough time with Prince Charles and place in the Firm.
Veteran royal reporter and editor Robert Jobson, in his 2006 book, ‘William’s Princess’, wrote about how a young William served as Diana’s confidant during the dark period.
The admission came after Diana alerted William to the Bashir interview the day before it aired, while he was at school at Eton.
Mr Jobson wrote that after he had watched it: “William, her ever-dependable little consort, was mortified and hurt by his mother’s words on Panorama.

“For a while he ignored her, not wanting to continue in his role as her confidant any more.”
Harry is said to have passed on the offer to watch it.
Mr Jobson added: “William was called down to his house master’s study shortly before 8pm, where he watched his mother’s interview in solitude.
“William watched in dismay as Diana went further than anybody had imagined she would.”

Despite this, the royal author said: “But within a few weeks, she was forgiven; his love for her was unconditional.
“He could never forsake her, however much her behaviour made him wince.”
Later on, Mr Jobson wrote of how much Diana relied on William, and said: “His mother leaned heavily on her eldest son in her times of need – ties when William was still just a little boy.
“He also had a natural knack of spotting what Princess Diana needed.
“Whenever Diana felt uncertain, William was there for her.
“He once told her he wanted to be a policeman so he could protect her. Her heart must have ached with love at his earnest words.”
Meanwhile, reports suggest that William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, could pick up some of Meghan and Harry’s roles the Queen disposed them of.
Kate is tipped to assume Meghan’s role as National Theatre patron – although Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex are also being considered for the role.
William, the future king, has yet to comment on the Oprah interview, with many commentators noting that it is unlikely he ever will.
Royal commentator Katie Nicholls, however, told ET that the royal will be “devastated” by the contents of the interview.
She said: “William is devastated by this interview. Don’t forget that the Duchess of Cambridge is being dragged into this whole saga and William will hate that and of course, the relationship between father and son is of course at an all-time low.
“I think that the idea that Kate’s being dragged into this will be upsetting for Kate who behind the scenes has tried really hard to be a peacemaker between William and Harry.
“She has been deeply saddened by the brothers’ falling out. Don’t forget she was incredibly close to Harry herself.”
