Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter spoke out after Good Morning Britain weather presenter Alex Beresford argued William had coped better than his younger brother with the tragic death of their mother. Ms Arbiter said that while “grief affects people in myriad ways” the suggestion the Duke of Cambridge has “escaped largely unscathed is perhaps an assumption too far”.

Writing for Australian website 9Honey, the royal expert said: “There’s no question Diana’s death has had a devastating impact on her youngest son, but in recognising Harry’s pain it would be wrong to dismiss William’s palpable grief.

“Two young boys suffered the loss of their mother; two bravely walked behind her funeral cortege and two have endured a lifetime of grief.”

Ms Arbiter highlighted how William – who previously described the loss of his mother as “pain like no other pain” – has “spoken openly and honestly of his personal grief” over the years.

She added: “In doing so he’s been able to empathise with the bereaved from all walks of life and his firsthand experience has allowed him to offer solace based on a shared sense of loss.”

Ms Arbiter also said William has “continued to champion the causes most meaningful to her” as he continues Diana’s legacy.

And in private, the royal expert said, William has been “equally committed to including her in every aspect of his life”.

Ms Arbiter’s comments come after Mr Beresford clashed with Piers Morgan earlier this month on GMB over Harry and Meghan Markle’s Oprah Winfrey interview.

Mr Beresford said: “William has gone through the same thing but do you know what, siblings experience tragedy in their life and one will be absolutely fine and brush it off and the other will not be able to deal with it so strongly, and that’s clearly what has happened with Prince Harry in this situation”.

He also said of Harry: “He walked behind his mother’s coffin at a tender, tender age in front of the globe.

“That is going to shape a young boy for the rest of his life.”

William was just 15 and Harry was 12 when their mother died in a Paris car crash in 1997.

Mr Morgan sensationally quit GMB earlier this month after insisting he “didn’t believe a word” of Meghan’s interview.

His final episode saw him storm off the set following his row with Mr Beresford.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a series of bombshell claims about the Royal Family during the tell-all interview, including allegations of racism and about Meghan’s mental health.

The couple, who are expecting their second child, quit royal duties in March 2020 and are now living in California with their young son Archie.

Harry is expected to return to the UK in the summer for the unveiling of a statue he and William commissioned in honour of their late mother.
