Prince William and Kate’s first joint engagement in London in 2021 was overshadowed by the fallout created by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah. During the engagement, the Duke of Cambridge made the extraordinary choice to answer questions related to the two-hour-long chat aired in the US on Sunday evening.

William was asked whether he had spoken to his brother Prince Harry since the interview aired.

Wearing a blue face covering, the Duke replied: “I haven’t spoken to him yet but I will do.”

Prince William also responded to the allegations of racism made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Asked whether the Firm is “a racist family”, William answered saying: “We are very much not a racist family.”

Prince William’s reply to the reporter has been described as “unprecedented” by ITV royal editor Chris Ship.

He wrote on Twitter: “It’s unprecedented for a senior royal to speak in this way.

“And shows the fight they now have on their hands to repair their reputation following Meghan and Harry’s explosive claims.

“Remember the Queen’s statement said, ‘recollections may vary’.”

During her interview with Oprah, Meghan claimed “concerns” were raised over “how dark” the skin of her firstborn would be while she was still pregnant.

Neither the Duke nor Duchess of Sussex wanted to reveal who had made this comment, but Oprah said Harry had stressed it hadn’t been the Queen nor Prince Philip – leaving the world to wonder who may have made a similar remark.

During the same interview, the Duke of Sussex commented on the relationship with his brother.

He said: “I love William to bits. He’s my brother. We’ve been through hell together.

“I mean, we have a shared experience. But we… you know, we’re on… we’re on different paths.”

As Oprah pressed on, the Duke added: “The relationship [with William] is space at the moment. Time heals all things.”

Prince Harry had expressed a similar sentiment in October 2019 when, speaking to ITV broadcaster Tom Bradby during his last tour as senior royal, was asked about rumours of a rift with his brother.

The Duke said at the time: “Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it’s under.

“Inevitably, you know, stuff happens. But we’re brothers. We’ll always be brothers.

“We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and, as I know, he will always be there for me.

“We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we are so busy.

“But I love him dearly. And you know the majority of stuff is created out of nothing.

“But as brothers, you know, you have good days, you have bad days.”

This morning, Prince William and Kate carried out their first engagement in person this morning with a visit at School21 in Statford, east London.

During the visit, the senior royals touched upon several key topics including the challenges of education during the coronavirus pandemic and the rollout in secondary school of a mental health project for pupils successfully launched by Kate in 2018 for primary schools.
