It was a decade ago today that more than 300 million people around the world watched William and Kate’s wedding in Westminster Abbey. Much has changed since April 29, 2011, but the same shared joy they portrayed on that day shines through in today’s two official portraits, taken by celebrity photographer Chris Floyd at Kensington Palace this week.

Kate, 39, wears a £195 flowery Ghost Avery wrap dress, which she previously wore at a British High Commission reception on the couple’s tour of Pakistan in 2019.

William, 38, and Kate, now pivotal figures for the future of the British monarchy, find themselves sharing a bigger burden of royal duties after years in which they tried to delay the inevitable.

But they have still managed to retain a degree of normality for themselves and their children – George, seven, Charlotte, five, and Louis, three – that the Queen and perhaps Prince Charles can only dream of.

Only last weekend, the couple and their youngsters enjoyed a Sunday lunch in the garden of the Rose & Crown at Snettisham in Norfolk, close to their country hideaway, Anmer Hall.

As William and Kate reach their 10-year milestone, a YouGov poll shows that the nation’s love for them is growing with a net approval rating of 68 per cent for Prince William and 67 per cent for Kate. Only the Queen on 76 per cent is higher.

Wills and Kate’s wedding is widely recalled as a day that made the UK proud but it was not without its hitches, as a special BBC programme reveals.

Fiona Cairns and Rachel Eardley, who led the team that designed the cake, tell how the Queen discovered they had removed a door at Buckingham Palace because the cake was too big. The Queen surprised them and said: “I understand you’ve been dismantling my house.”

Later, William had to be rescued by his brother Harry when he started to drive Kate out of the palace in Prince Charles’s Aston Martin Volante sports car.

Former rugby ace Sir Clive Woodward tells the show that it did not go smoothly.

“They drove off and he struggled and he’s chugging out – this is at the back of Buckingham Palace – and Harry goes running after him,” says Sir Clive, laughing. “He had the handbrake on.”
