The Queen has ruled Britain for 67 years – and even at 94 years of age, the monarch doesn’t appear to be making any preparations to give up her lifelong duties. While it has long been speculated that Prince Charles may give up his claim so that his son Prince William can step up early, the Queen’s eldest son has confirmed he will take up the mantle when the time comes.

When Prince Charles inherits the throne from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, a series of changes will take place in the short and long term for the rest of the Royal Family.

Assuming that the Queen dies before the Duke of Cornwall, aside from himself those most heavily impacted will be those in the line of succession.

Prince William has been in training his entire life to eventually become King, and will already be well acquainted with what lies ahead for him and his family.

So what will change for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge when Charles accedes to the throne?

Title changes

Title changes will be automatic, as Charles will give up his dukedom to become King.

As the Duke of Cornwall title is usually held by the eldest son of the monarch, it will naturally pass down to William automatically.

Royal expert Iain MacMarthanne reveals: “When Charles inherits the throne the Duke of Cambridge will automatically become Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay amongst other titles that are assumed by the heir to the throne.

“As his wife, Catherine will become Duchess of Cornwall and Rothesay.
“These new dukedoms will be in addition to that of Cambridge already held.”

However, Mr MacMarthanne also adds that Charles’ Prince of Wales title will not automatically be passed on to William.

He adds: “The title of Prince of Wales is not assumed automatically by the heir to the throne, and remains within the gift of the monarch.

“In the case of Charles, his mother the Queen created him Prince of Wales in 1958.

“In the event of the Duke of Cambridge being made Prince of Wales, Catherine would automatically become Princess of Wales.”

When Prince Charles becomes King, he will no longer be entitled to the profits from the Duchy of Cornwall as he is no longer the Duke of Cornwall.

This will be passed on to William – and will make the couple considerably richer.

The Duchy encompasses 135,000 acres of land in southern England as well as an investment portfolio.

The land estate includes everything from farms to residential and commercial properties to natural resources like forests and coastal areas.

It was created in 1337 by Edward III and its purpose is to provide an income for the oldest son of the monarch.

Prince William will get it – but his brother Prince Harry will, unfortunately, miss out.

Prince Charles earned around £20million in 2017 from the Duchy of Cornwall profits – so it’ll make a pretty big change for the couple.
