Prince William visited the MI5 headquarters in London on Wednesday. The visit was low profile, and little to no detail has been shared with the public.
The Court Circular, which records every official event carried out by full-time working royals, presents a brief entry dated November 11 in relation to this engagement.
It read: “The Duke of Cambridge this morning visited MI5, the Security Service, Thames House.”
This visit comes after the Queen headed to Thames House in February 2020.
Following her departure from the headquarters, Buckingham Palace revealed Her Majesty had met members of the staff at the MI5, including its outgoing new director-general Andrew Parker.
While at Thames House, she also praised the organisation’s ability for its commitment to its own motto.
Prince William isn’t new to the MI5 and, during his latest visit, he may have noticed a few familiar faces as he completed a brief internship at the security service in 2019.
Following the end of this experience, Kensington Palace said the Duke had spent a total of three weeks getting to know the work carried out at the MI5, the MI6 and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).
The unusual internship was described by William as a “truly humbling experience”.
At the end of his three-week stint, the Duke said: “Spending time inside our security and intelligence agencies, understanding more about the vital contribution they make to our national security, was a truly humbling experience.
“These agencies are full of people from everyday backgrounds doing the most extraordinary work to keep us safe.
“They work in secret, often not even able to tell their family and friends about the work they do or the stresses they face.
“They are driven by an unrivalled patriotism and dedication to upholding the values of this country.
“We all owe them deep gratitude for the difficult and dangerous work they do.”
This internship wasn’t the first work experience carried out by the second-in-line to the throne.
Before he attended the military academy in Sandhurst in the mid-2000s, William got to know a few City institutions through work experiences at, among others, the Bank of England, the London Stock Exchange and Lloyds of London.
Later tonight, Prince William will join forces with other senior royals as they will attend the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.
He will be accompanied by his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, as well as his father Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Other royals set to attend are the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Princess Anne and the Queen’s first cousins Princess Alexandra, the Duke of Kent and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
Most notably, however, the Queen will be absent, as she continues to follow her doctors’ advice to rest.
Despite her doctors’ desire to see her remaining at Windsor Castle and only carry out light desk duties, the Queen will step out of her residence tomorrow to honour the fallen.
As she has done since 2017, the Queen will attend the National Service of Remembrance from one of the balconies of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Prince Charles will lay a wreath of poppies on her behalf.
The monarch has no other in-person engagement scheduled in her diary for weeks to come and on Thursday Buckingham Palace announced she would pull out of a visit scheduled for November 16 as she is “mindful” of what her medical team told her.
