Prince Andrew’s failed bid to have Virginia Giuffre’s sexual assault case against him thrown out of US court has triggered a “PR disaster” for Prince William, according to royal commentator Russell Myers. Mr Myers believes the developments have left the Duke of Cambridge fighting for his and his children’s future.

The Daily Mirror’s Royal Editor told The Royal Beat: “The Palace were trying to distance William’s role from this from a PR perspective and trying not to overplay his hand.

“But he is fighting for his future, and he is fighting for his children’s future as well.

“All of this has been a PR disaster.”

The royal commentator went on to argue that Andrew’s behaviour in the course of the legal dispute had been a “total unmitigated disaster”.

“I think the total unmitigated disaster in all of this has been not only the way he has handled himself, but the wall of silence as well,” Mr Myers said.

“Trying to dismiss the arguments and expecting it to go away and paying big money lawyers to make ludicrous arguments.

“I think the judge saw through each and every one of them, so he is in a very tricky situation now.

“Does he try and settle now? Will she want to settle? I’m not too sure she will. I think she will take him to court, and it will go all the way.”

Ms  Giuffre claims she was trafficked by disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein to have sex with Andrew, and was seemingly pictured with the royal and his friend Ghislaine Maxwell during the period the alleged act took place.

Andrew categorically denies the claims and insists he has “no recollection” of ever even meeting Ms Giuffre.

While the 61-year-old is not accused of criminal wrongdoing,  the US court decision does mean the prince could face a trial in a huge blow to the reputation of the royals.

The trial could begin between September and December 2022 if no out-of-court settlement is reached before then.

Media lawyer Mark Stephens has said the ruling will prompt meetings of senior royals as they attempt to deal with the looming reputational damage to the monarchy during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year.

He told the BBC: “Judge Lewis Kaplan has thrown a reasoned judicial decision like a bomb into the middle and the heart of the Royal Family and threatens to provoke constitutional crisis as a consequence.

“Essentially, I think he’s either going to have to engage in the trial process or he’s going to have to settle and that may well be his least worst option.

“Prince Andrew has nowhere to go.”
