Prince William penned a personal tweet on Tuesday morning, ahead of the beginning of a new investiture ceremony. He wrote on Twitter: “Pleased to be back doing investitures in person, celebrating people across the UK who have gone above and beyond for their country and community.”

To stress he was the person behind the tweet, the Duke of Cambridge signed it off with his initial, “W”.

The message also included the picture of an award placed on a velvet pillow.

The tweet by the second-in-line to the throne sent royal fans into a frenzy.

One Twitter user, with the nickname MG, wrote: “I’m sure they really appreciate receiving them from you in person. It’s so wonderful to honour those helping their communities.”

A fan account of Kate and William called The Cambridges said: “Yaay that’s wonderful! I can’t wait to see the pictures and learn more about the amazing people being honored today.”

Another royal watcher, jen, added: “So lovely to have you there.”

And a fourth Twitter user, Stefani Molina, wrote: “What a glorious day it will be.”

The Duke of Cambridge is one of the three people who can lead these poignant engagements on behalf of the Queen.

Prince Charles and Princess Anne are also allowed to support the monarch in this duty.

And they have been busy handing out awards and honours over the past few months, after investitures resumed following a long break forced by the pandemic.

Today marked the first in-person investiture ceremony led by William since the start of the Covid crisis in March 2020.

The engagement took place at Windsor Castle and among the recipients of the honours there was Marcus Rashford.

Accompanied by his mother Melanie, Rashford was honoured with an MBE for his relentless support to vulnerable children throughout the pandemic and school closures.
