Prince William was only 15 when he lost his mother, the late Princess Diana in August 1997. During a visit to their family home in May, William shared some advice with the late Deborah James’s two children, 14-year-old son Hugo and 12-year-old daughter Eloise, on how to cope with losing a parent. Speaking on the latest episode of Royally Us, hosts Christina Garibaldi and Christine Ross discussed William’s act of kindness.
Ms Garibaldi said: “It was such a beautiful moment when Prince William went there, gave her her Damehood, had tea, had some champagne, and really spent a lovely afternoon with the family.
Ms Ross added: “This really was, you know, her, Deborah James’, time in the final stages of hospice care at home.
“It was a really powerful moment for the British people, everyone knew the story.”
Ms Ross described William’s involvement as “so wonderful” and that it “really validated that this woman touched so many people’s lives”.
Ms Garibaldi suggested that William likely gave Deborah’s children “some really great advice” with him having lost his mother around the same age.
She added: “I’m sure they can relate on a lot of different levels that most of us can’t.
“I’m sure it was a really special moment for them”.
Ms Ross added that from the photographs of William with the family, William did “look like a family member”.
Prince William was 'overawed' by Deborah James says Myers
Aged just 36, Diana tragically passed away in a car accident in Paris.
In his 2006 book ‘William’s Princess’, royal expert Robert Jobson wrote about how, during the dark period, a young William acted as Diana’s confidant.
Mr Jobson wrote that, after having watched Diana’s Panorama interview, William, Diana’s “ever-dependable little consort”, was “mortified”.
“For a while he ignored her, not wanting to continue in his role as her confidant any more.”

However, he describes William’s love for his mother as “unconditional”.
Mr Jobson wrote that Diana “leaned heavily on her eldest son in her times of need.
“Whenever Diana felt uncertain, William was there for her.”
