Charles and Diana’s eldest son was born in June 1982 and within roughly a week, his name was shared with the public by his delighted parents. Yet behind the scenes, an intense debate had raged as to the choice of name for Britain’s future king. Robert Lacey, a royal historian, claimed that Charles had his heart set on naming his first born after King Arthur.

Arthur was a legendary British leader who, according to medieval histories and romances, led the defence of Britain against Saxon invaders in the late 5th and early 6th centuries.

However, Diana had other ideas and drew her inspiration from another great historical figure who ruled over the British Isles.

Mr Lacey told People magazine: “Diana, Princess of Wales proposed a more robust name — William, as in ‘William the Conqueror,’ victor of the famed Battle of Hastings in 1066.”

Charles had the consolation of seeing his preferred choice added as one of William’s middle names.

The others are Philip – in honour of his grandfather Prince Philip – and Louis thought to be inspired by Lord Louis Mountbatten.

The royal historian revealed that Diana had no doubts that her eldest son would live up to his namesake and was a “born leader.”

While at university, William made every effort to conceal his royal status by adopting a special moniker.

On completing his A-levels, the Duke of Cambridge began life as an undergraduate at St Andrews University in 2001.

By doing so, he broke a 150-year tradition in the Royal Family, where members often went to either Oxford and Cambridge university.

He started by studying Art History, before switching to Geography and would go on to graduate with a Scottish Master of Arts in 2005.

By all accounts, William wanted to blend in with the crowd and was keen not to draw attention to his royal status.

So he reportedly decided to go by the name of “Steve” in an effort to conceal his blue blood heritage.
