Prince William, 39, can look back with pride on the past year as he celebrates his birthday today, one royal commentator has claimed. The future king and his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 39, have shown themselves to be exemplar royals throughout what has been a difficult 18 months for the Firm.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s attacks on the monarchy during their Oprah Winfrey interview in March left senior royals, including William, reeling and the wounds are yet to heal.

Reflecting on William’s work over the past year, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “Prince William can celebrate his birthday today in the knowledge that he and Catherine have had an amazing year with highly significant charitable projects.

“In his case the Earthshot Prize for the environment and mental health with the Heads Together initiative, together with Catherine, who has also launched The Centre for Early Childhood.”

The Cambridges “make a perfect team” and have excelled during an “unpredictable period” for the monarchy, Mr Fitzwilliams claimed.

He added the pair “are confident and project a positive image during a difficult and unpredictable period for the Royal Family.”

Mr Fitzwilliams praised the Duke’s “powerful attack” on the BBC following Lord Dyson’s report into Martin Bashir’s 1995 Panorama interview with Princess Diana.

The commentator added: “William’s stature is evident in the statements he puts out, his tribute to Prince Philip’s was particularly moving and when he excoriated the BBC over Panorama, it was a powerful attack.

“His dedication is undoubted and he has said that he derives his inspiration from the Queen.”

William has taken on an important diplomatic role in recent years and represented the Crown abroad in politically difficult places including Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Mr Fitzwilliams added: “He also has an important ‘soft power’ role, whether visiting Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, EU countries to spread goodwill after Brexit, or in trips north of the border to help preserve the union.”

Despite the “tragic” rift with his brother Harry, William seems to be “thriving”, Mr Fitzwilliams claimed.

He added: “Then there is his tragic rift with the brother he was once inseparable from and his publicly expressed anger at the charge of racism in the Oprah interview.

Mr Fitzwilliams said: “This rift and what happens is where so much press and public interest focuses.”

“It’s extremely tough in the royal goldfish bowl, but he and Catherine are clearly thriving and wish him a very happy birthday.”

William delighted royal fans at the weekend when he stepped out with Prince George, seven, and Princess Charlotte, six to cheer on people taking part in a half-marathon in Norfolk.

A hands-on father, William was captured gently instructing George and Charlotte to clap for the runners as they made their way past.

Body language expert analysed the sweet moment for Express.co.uk and said: “This undeniably sweet moment could be George and Charlotte performing their first royal duty, doing the countdown at the start of a race, with their father doing a very gentle job of inducting them into the Firm.

“A trait for shy body language runs in the family but, having shown signals of social shyness himself for much of his life, William is the perfect parent to help George, in particular, gain confidence when all eyes are on him.

“It is so good to see him walking off with his eldest son’s hand in his own, providing a sense of security and reassurance as well as making the young heir to the throne looking like a real chip off the old block.”
