Prince William and Princess Kate speak out after Lioness’ win over Nigeria

World Cup: England fans celebrate as the Lionesses edge past Nigeria

The Prince and Princess of Wales have reacted to England’s tense World Cup match against Nigeria after the narrow victory took the Lionesses to the Quarter-finals.

Prince William and Princess Kate took to their joint Instagram account to share their reaction to the Lioness’ (England women’s national football team) narrow win against Nigeria on Monday.

The account shared the England Women’s victory post and wrote: “Well done @lionesses. It was hard-fought but now we’re on to the quarter-finals. Good luck.”

The message came from the Kensington Palace account as opposed to being tagged with a W or C, indicating a personal message from William or Kate (Catherine).

The Lionesses edged to victory in a tense match that saw them knock out Nigeria on penalties 4-2.

It came a week after the team trashed China to reach to last 16 in a spectacular 6-1 win., which Prince William also commended.

He wrote last Tuesday: “Into the knockouts we go. The hard work continues.”

Prince William is President of the Football Association (FA) and plays a central role in supporting a number of teams in their competitions around the globe.

He made a number of visits to the Lioness’s training ground ahead of their World Cup bid in Australia and has continued to show his support as they progress in the tournament.

William was also there to present the winning trophy to the team on the pitch at Wembley and was seen hugging the players one by one after their emphatic Euro Final win over Germany in 2022.

He told the team and staff in a speech heard at St George’s Park last year: “What you did for the country last year at the Euros was phenomenal and where you’re going to take women’s sport, not just football, is incredible.

“You’re a great team, the vibe I get from you all is fantastic. There are a lot of teams out there who could learn a lot from the way you work together. Huge respect, and go get ’em!”

William has been President FA since 2006 and is known to be a huge Aston Villa fan.

Explaining why he chose to support the Birmingham-based club, he told BBC presenter Gary Linker: “A long time ago at school I got into football big time. I was looking around for clubs. All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans and I didn’t want to follow the run of the mill teams.

“I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments.

“Aston Villa’s always had a great history. I have got friends of mine who support Aston Villa and one of the first FA Cup games I went to was Bolton v Aston Villa back in 2000.”

The England women’s national football team will play their next world cup match on August 12.
