Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge have been praised for “adding their royal stardust” to The Earthshot Prize awards ceremony, as the couple becomes increasingly involved in the climate change crisis. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge appeared at Alexandra Palace last night with a number of celebrities and renowned activists, in order to present the inaugural Earthshot Prize to its first five winners.
Royal expert Russell Myers said: “This is a big deal, it may have slipped under the radar for some people but we’ve had quite a lot of advertising about it, a lot of people talking about it, obviously Prince Charles and the Queen have been speaking about the upcoming UN climate conference next month.
This is a big deal, The Earthshot Prize was devised by Prince William to give young people a voice and it’s going to be over the next 10 years, they’ve got a big pot of prize money.
There’s £5million being given to five winners each year for the next decade so really, really amazing innovative things happening all over the world, and we had a bit of glitz and glamour as well, because you need that.
Breakfast show host Lorraine Kelly continued: “There was, I think you probably do. Some people might say it’s quite shallow, but actually, it gets people talking about it. That’s why the royals do these things because them adding their royal stardust makes people talk about it.
A number of celebrities and well-known faces made an appearance on the green carpet on Sunday evening.
Amongst them were Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, who was presenting an award, footballer Mo Salah and singer Ed Sheeran.
Dame Emma Thompson also took to the stage to present an award and posed for photographs on the green carpet with Nigerian singer Yemi Alade.
In order to ensure that the ceremony was as eco-friendly as possible, guests were instructed not to buy any new clothes for the event.

The Duchess of Cambridge opted to wear a lilac dress from Alexander McQueen, which she had last worn in 2011 during a visit to Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Prince William wore a velvet green tuxedo jacket with a black turtleneck jumper.
In between awards, there were several performances from high-profile artists, including a song from Ed Sheeran and Korean pop band KSI.
