The Duke of Cambridge spoke candidly about the dynamic with his wife in the garden, an area which he said she has grown in confidence. The father-of-three touched on his lack of horticultural skills during a visit to Brighter Futures, a consortium of eight community projects in Rhyl, North Wales. William, 38, revealed Kate, 39, is investing in a book by Monty Don, the presenter to the BBC series Gardeners’ World, for him.

And he said she has been encouraging him to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty – so he can share the Prince of Wales’ passion for plants.

William said: “My wife does all the gardening. I really like it but I have no idea what I’m doing.”

The Queen’s grandson discussed the topic with Brian Penney, 52, a co-ordinator for Men’s Sheds, part of the consortium and an initiative encouraging isolated men to build things and grow vegetables together.

He showed off his funny side by joking with Mr Penney about the tiny children’s watering can he was using to hydrate plants.

William quipped: “It’s good to see you have got really nice watering cans. Nice pink colour.

“That’s a lovely mermaid. Very masculine for the Men’s Sheds.”

The duke laughed as he added: “I always find something to embarrass people with.”

Mr Penney said afterwards: “He told me Kate is getting him into gardening. She’s going to get him Monty Don’s book.

“He said she wants to get him into it because Charles is into it, so it’s something for them to enjoy together.

“He was so down to earth, such a nice man.”

It’s no wonder Kate is keen to get William interested in his father’s hobby as she is known to be close to the Prince of Wales.

The Duchess of Cambridge was snapped putting her arm around her father-in-law and kissing his cheek following the funeral of Prince Philip last month.

After marrying into the Royal Family 10 years ago, Kate bonded with Charles over their shared interests including their love for the great outdoors.

The Cambridges released an adorable video to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary in April.

It showed Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, six, and three-year-old Prince Louis frolicking with their mum and dad in nature.

Kate has in the past worked to encourage youngsters to spend time outdoors and pointed to the benefits for their mental and physical health.
