Prince Philip, 99, has been married to the Queen, 94, for 73 years as they became the longest-married couple after celebrating 70 years. But the Duke of Edinburgh wanted to reinvent the Royal Family as he pushed for the wedding ceremony to be recorded and broadcast around the world. The ceremony was broadcast on the radio to millions of listeners, and there were 2,500 guests at Westminster, including six kings and seven queens.

Philip’s reinvention to keep up with the technology has been echoed throughout the years but more so in the coronavirus lockdown as the Queen has not only been on social media but also had her first royal engagement on Zoom.

Speaking on True Royalty TV, journalist Sean Fletcher, said: “We see throughout history how the Royal Family try and reinvent themselves in terms of reaching a new audience.

“Prince Philip, during his wedding, he got television cameras in and now we’re talking about social media.

“We’re talking about them getting themselves out there.

“You think about social media, it’s a young person’s game, isn’t it?

“You don’t get as many older people on it. They are reaching out. They are almost reinventing themselves as well.”

Host Kate Thornton adeed: “One great thing about lockdown is we can see into so many people’s homes.

“Here we are peering through the keyhole of many royal residences.”

The royal couple are currently self-isolating together at Windsor Castle due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Monarch travelled to Windsor from Buckingham Palace for the UK lockdown and the Duke of Edinburgh, who has been enjoying retirement on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, travelled to join her.

But a royal expert has since revealed that during their time at Windsor, the royal couple have spent the most time together in their married life.

Ms Thornton said: “Imagine how the Royal Family must feel because they’ve all been lockded down together.

“The Queen, we’ve seen has moved into Windsor, Philip left Sandringham to join her.

“This is arguably the longest time they’ve spent together in their married life.”

Sunday Times Royal Correspondent Roya Nikkhah added: “They are holding up well. I love the photo of them that was published last week for Philip’s 99th birthday.

“But you’re absolutely right, this is the longest they have spent together because Philip retired from public life three years ago.

“Since then he’s been spending most of his time at Sandringham in Norkfolk while the Queen spending most of her time at Buckingham Palace.”
