A neighbour of the Duke and the Duchess of Sussex was among the royal fans who expressed their wish Prince William and Prince Harry would resolve their purported rift. The Montecito local told Sky News: “It is very sad and my first reaction was that it happened at a really bad time because there seems to be a family rift.

“But he made it to 99 and he was very influential in my opinion.

“I think the family differences have been somewhat sensationalised.

“I don’t think they’re actually as significant as many people want to make out.”

Another Montecito resident, told the news outlet Prince Philip had wrongfully been considered “kind of mean”.

They said: “I think he was a good guy. I always thought he was a very tough, natural guy.

“Everybody said he was kind of mean and I have to say ‘Come on, give me a break’. I kind of liked him.”

Prince Philip, who died at the age of 99, was the longest-serving consort to a monarch in British history.

His death was announced by Buckingham Palace in a statement on Friday morning.

It read: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

Prince Philip’s coffin will be transported from Windsor Castle to the chapel in a specially modified Land Rover he helped to design.

Prince Charles will walk behind the vehicle flanked by other senior royals.

Prince Harry is set to fly in from the US to attend the funeral, the Palace has confirmed.

Meghan Markle, who is pregnant with the couple’s second child, will not attend on doctor’s advice, the Palace added.
