Prince Philip: Expert discusses possible birthday celebrations

Royal commentator Natalie Oliveri said the latest cancellation of Trooping the Colour, has thrown into doubt a big celebration for Prince Philip’s 100th. While speaking to Today Extra, she noted Prince Philip has also said he would not like a big celebration anyway. Despite this, she added regardless of the Covid restrictions, the Duke of Edinburgh would have some small form of celebration at Windsor Castle to mark the momentous occasion.

Ms Oliveri said: “On June 10 Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh will turn 100.

“He has always said he doesn’t want a big fuss created for his birthday.

“In light of his illness, it is hard to imagine there will be huge celebrations anyway.

“This cancellation of Trooping the Colour does throw into doubt anything really taking place.”

The royal expert noted that while a massive event is unlikely, there may still be some form of celebration.

She continued: “You would hope something would be marked, perhaps a ten gun salute, something smaller at Windsor Castle.

“Garden parties have all been cancelled this year again, they have all been scrapped for the second year running.

“Last year the Queen held a little mini trooping the colour in the quadrangle of the castle.

“So perhaps we will see something like that celebrated for Prince Philip.

“I mean it is 100, there has to be something.”

Ms Oliveri’s prediction comes after it was announced the Trooping of the Colour would be cancelled for the second year in a row.

Buckingham Palace released a statement explaining that the event would not be held due to the coronavirus pandemic after consultation with the Government.

The statement read: “Following consultation with Government and other relevant parties it has been agreed that the Queen’s Official Birthday Parade, also known as Trooping the Colour, will not go ahead this year in its traditional form in central London.”

Trooping the Colour is the annual celebration held each year in London to celebrate the Queen’s public birthday.

The royal event always falls in June, when large crowds gather for the procession outside Buckingham Palace.

Most Royal Family members are present for the event each year and join the Queen on the balcony.
