Historian Robert Lacey said the Duke of Edinburgh played a key role in preparing the Duke of Cambridge, who is second in line to the throne, for his future position. Philip also suggested the idea of lunches between William and his grandmother the Queen, Mr Lacey added.
The royal biographer told People magazine: “Philip was crucial in helping coach William as a future King.
“It was Philip’s idea to set up the lunches between William and his grandmother.
“When the time came for the Queen to talk business with William, Philip would quietly excuse himself because he didn’t feel that the constitutional side of the Queen’s job was something he wanted to interfere in.”
Royal author Penny Junor added that the Duke passed on “elements of the serious and the fun” to William and Prince Harry.
The royal patriarch died peacefully aged 99 at Windsor Castle on April 9.
William paid a touching tribute to Philip, saying in a statement: “My grandfather’s century of life was defined by service – to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family.
“I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days.
“I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her.
“I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!
“My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation.
“Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support the Queen in the years ahead.
“I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job.”

Philip’s funeral took place at St George’s Chapel last Saturday.
And royal mourning for the Duke ended for the monarchy and their households today.
Members of the Royal Family will return to their official roles in full after observing the two-week period of mourning.
The Queen marked her 95th birthday on Wednesday without her “strength and stay”, as she famously described her beloved late husband.
In a statement, she thanked the public for their tributes to Philip.
The monarch said: “I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate.
“While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world.
“My family and I would like to thank you all for the support and kindness shown to us in recent days.
“We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.”
The Duke’s death came a few months before his 100th birthday, which was due to be the focus of royal celebrations this year, while the Queen’s 95th was to be more low-key.
The Royal Family, following Covid guidelines, have been rallying round the monarch.
