Prince Philip shock: Duke confronted guests at Buckingham Palace – ‘Why are you here?’
Walliams revealed Prince Philip recognised the TV personalities and had no problem asking them why they are in his house. The children’s book author and comedian, who starred in Little Britain and has featured as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent, was one of the guests on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday to promote his latest work. As his new book is called The Beast of Buckingham Palace, Walliams was asked whether he had been to the palace himself and when he last visited.
The author recalled he had last been to Buckingham Palace to attend a Variety Club reception.
And, on that occasion, he had quite a shocking chat with the Duke of Edinburgh.
The author said: “I was with my mum because I like to bring her to these events and also Rod Stewart was there and also Lenny Henry.
“Prince Philip said, ‘What are you two doing here?’ and we said, ‘We’re here Walliams Comic Relief’, and he said, ‘It’s only on once a year!’”
Williams, laughing, recalled how he told Prince Philip the show doesn’t come together in just one night – before the conversation took a bizarre turn.
He said: “I was like, ‘It takes more than one night to actually get the show together,’ and he went to Lenny Henry, ‘You’re not even on television anymore, apart from those Premier Inn adverts.”
Prince Philip’s dry answer shocked Jonathan Ross’s other guest, singer Robbie Williams, who asked the author: “Seriously?”
Walliams then said, making the public and the show’s presenter laugh: “Yeah, who knew he watches ITV?”
Ross’s guests also discussed the author’s OBE, received in 2017 for his services to charity and the arts.
Speaking about what you can actually see of Buckingham Palace as a guest, Walliams said: “But you only see bits of it, because I mean…”
The writer turned to the singer, asking him to confirm you can’t see much of the palace during official occasions.
But Williams replied with a joke, saying: “I have seen all of it.”
To come back to the singer, Walliams then rubbed his OBE in the face of Williams, saying: “Yes, I have received an award.
“I don’t like to mention it, but I do have an OBE.
“It’s nice, I just wanted to be able to bring my mum to Buckingham Palace.”
Prince Philip retired from public life on August 2 2017, after carrying out his last engagement in the backyard of Buckingham Palace.
The Duke of Edinburgh has since been seen in public on rare occasions, including the weddings of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank in 2018.
Prince Philip was last spotted in public at another wedding, the one of Lady Gabriella Windsor, in May this year.
The Duke was in good spirits and looked well, as he was spotted laughing and joking with Prince Harry.
Prince Philip spent his summer with the Queen at Balmoral, before travelling to Sandringham in early September, where he is spending his days reading and “pottering about” after suffering a “bit of a wobble”, according to a source.
They told The Sun: “A few weeks ago Philip had a bit of a wobble and hasn’t felt so energetic.
“He has been living quietly at Sandringham, where he spends most of his time reading and pottering about.
“Until recently he has been very active — carriage riding, fishing at Balmoral and driving around royal estates — although he no longer drives on public roads following his crash in January.
