Prince Philip is a proud man who had to get used to coming second after his wife Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952. While the Duke of Edinburgh willingly sacrificed his naval career to dedicate himself to serving the crown, one particular royal snub caused him years of grief. Here’s how baby Archie Harrison healed the Duke’s hurt pride.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor does not have a royal title but his name is of huge significance to his great grandfather Prince Philip.

The 98-year-old Duke retired from royal duty in 2017 and now enjoys his retirement away from the Windsor bubble.

While Philip spent decades in dedicated servitude to the Queen he now spends most of his time at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, away from royal business.

Over the decades Prince Philip honed his skills as the Queen’s Consort but the Duke did not always fit in at Buckingham Palace.

The exiled Greek prince was initially treated by courtiers and as an outsider and his German-sounding surname did not do him any favours.

Philip was born into the Greek and Danish royal families and adopted the surname Mountbatten from his maternal grandparents.

While Mountbatten was an anglicised version of the German surname it was still too foreign for British royal tastes and so he was banned from passing it onto his children.

The decision to stop Philip giving his name to his offspring was made by prime minister Winston Churchill and royal aide Tommy Lascelles.

They feared the name would cause public backlash so soon after the Second World War.

The heartbroken Duke was deeply hurt at the time and reported to have said: “I am the only man in the country not allowed to give his name to his children.

“I’m nothing but a bloody amoeba.”

In 1960 the Privacy Council made a declaration that the surname Mountbatten-Windsor would apply to male-line descendants of the Queen without royal styles and titles.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s son baby Archie Harrison is the most recent royal to take that surname.

Unknowingly the tiny tot has healed years of royal feuding and helped heal his great grandfather’s deep wounds.

The tot’s middle name, Harrison, has a very literal meaning.

Harrison means “the son of Harry” so there are no guesses where that choice came from.
