The Duke of Edinburgh died aged 99 earlier this month and was laid to rest in Windsor on Saturday. The Queen and 29 other close family and friends attended the service in St George’s Chapel and paid tribute to a near-century of love and duty from the Duke. Prince Harry was reunited with his family for the first time in over a year, but there was some tension in the air after his interview with Oprah Winfrey last month.

Meghan Markle was unable to travel because she is pregnant with their second child.

Pod Save the Queen is hosted by Ann Gripper and features Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers.

While Mr Myers has claimed Philip thought the Oprah interview was “complete madness”, the pair have also wondered whether he would have been allowed to watch it.

In an episode of the podcast just days before the bombshell interview aired, Ms Gripper commented that it would not be good for his heart.

She said: “I would imagine he would not be allowed to watch ITV on Monday night, because it will not do his heart any good at all ‒ so, stay away from the Oprah interview!”

Indeed, Philip was actually in hospital recovering from heart surgery when the programme was on.

He was first admitted to King Edward VII Hospital on February 16, which the Palace said was a “precautionary measure” after he felt unwell.

On February 23, it was confirmed by the Palace that he was being treated for an infection.

On March 1, Philip was transferred by ambulance to St Bartholomew’s Hospital to continue treatment for an infection and to undergo “testing and observation” for a pre-existing heart condition.

He went through a successful heart operation on March 3 and was transferred back to King Edward VII Hospital on March 5.

On March 7, just four days after his surgery, Meghan and Harry’s Oprah interview aired in the US, and then it was broadcast on ITV in the UK the following night.

Philip will likely have been in a very fragile state and watching the interview, which was explosive, may have caused him to get worked up.

The interview was full of criticism for the Royal Family, including accusations of racism and a lack of support for Meghan’s mental health difficulties.

It is possible the hospital will have not allowed Philip to watch it out of concern for his heart, although he is famously a stubborn man and may have insisted.

In a tribute episode to the Queen’s husband last week, Mr Myers noted that, while Philip had been against the Oprah interview, he had defended Harry’s right to decide his own future.

He referred to an obituary by Gyles Brandreth, who was friends with Philip for over 40 years and gave some interesting insights into how he felt about the Sussexes stepping back.

Mr Myers said: “He was saying that [Philip] didn’t agree with it, he didn’t think it was the right thing for them to do, he didn’t think it was the right thing for the country to do.

“And again while he commented that the Oprah Winfrey interview was complete madness, he agreed that Harry should go and live his own life, it was his to live, he had to make his own decisions, he was his own man.

“And that was why Harry was commenting [in his tribute to Philip] about being authentically himself.”

Philip was eventually discharged from hospital on March 16, a month after he was first admitted.

Mr Myers said that friends have claimed Philip knew he was gravely ill and wanted to be at home at Windsor Castle with the Queen.

He died three weeks after leaving hospital on April 9 and was buried a week later.

The Queen, who turned 95 yesterday, told her children that his loss has left a “void” in her life, but she also viewed it as a “miracle”, because he was very ill and died peacefully at home, with his wife by his side.

William and Harry are back on speaking terms after coming face to face at the funeral, although their issues appear to be far from over.
