Prince Philip: Expert discusses past hospital visits

Prince Philip, 99, has been taken to the King Edward VII’s Hospital as a precaution after feeling unwell, based on his doctor’s advice. Prince Philip is expected to stay at the London-based hospital for a few days to be kept under observation.

The King Edward VII’s Hospital describes itself online as “London’s foremost hospital” which attracts the “best consultants”.

The private hospital also boasts an impressive roster of patients, as over the years many members of the Royal Family have checked in.

Prince Philip’s current stay at King Edward VII’s is not his first, as he has been admitted several times in previous years.

Notably, Philip was admitted just before Christmas for four nights in 2019 on the advice of his doctor.

Prince Philip’s wife, the Queen, has also been a patient at King Edward VII’s in the past.

In 1982 the Queen was admitted for the extraction of a wisdom tooth, while in 2003 surgeons at the clinic removed non-cancerous minor growths from the Queen’s face and operated on her knee.

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge also received treatment at the hospital when she suffered from severe morning sickness while pregnant with her first child, Prince George.

Kate spoke about her experience with Hyperemesis Gravidarum in an interview with Giovanna Fletcher for the podcast Happy Mum, Happy Baby.

Kate explained: “I got very bad morning sickness, so I’m not the happiest of pregnant people.”

When asked if she had sickness for each of her three pregnancies, Kate replied: “Yes, unfortunately.

“Lots of people have it far, far worse, but it was definitely a challenge.

“Not just for me but also for your loved ones around you – and I think that’s the thing – being pregnant and having a newborn baby and things like that, impacts everybody in the family.”

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall also visited the hospital as a patient when she had a hysterectomy in 2012.

Which other hospitals have royals visited?

Another hospital which has proved popular with the Royal Family is the Portland Hospital.

Princess Eugenie gave birth to her first child, a boy, at the hospital earlier this month.

The hospital was also the place Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex welcomed their son Archie Harrison in 2019.

In previous years, the hospital was also the place Sarah, Duchess of York and Prince Andrew welcomed their daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

Other royals have opted to give birth at St Mary’s Hospital in London.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles were famously pictured leaving the hospital’s Lindo Wing upon the birth of Prince William and Prince Harry in the 1980s.

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William also chose the same hospital for the births of their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
