Prince Philip has been at King Edward VII’s hospital as a precautionary measure since last week. A Buckingham Palace source said the Duke is likely to remain in hospital until next week. A royal source also revealed the Duke’s admission was not due to coronavirus or related to the virus in any way. They added he had been taken into hospital by car and not in an ambulance, and the 99-year-old walked on to the grounds unaided.

Prince Charles visited his father in hospital on Saturday afternoon at about 3.20pm.

The Prince of Wales is the first member of the Royal Family to pay the Duke a visit during his time in hospital.

He spent about 40 minutes with his father, but Buckingham Palace gave no update on Philip’s condition.

A source said the Duke remains in “good spirits” despite staying in the hospital for “observation and rest”.

Prince Charles is understood to have travelled down to central London from his home in Highgrove, Gloucestershire, where he’s staying with the Duchess of Cornwall.

Following the visit, the Prince of Wales made the 100-mile-trip back up to Gloucestershire.

Prince Philip has not seen his eldest son since before Christmas due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

The Duke of Edinburgh has been staying with the Queen in their Windsor Castle home since the pandemic started last year.

They have both had their coronavirus vaccines, Buckingham Palace recently confirmed.

The Prince of Wales’ visit to his father had raised concerns about the Duke’s condition, as it appeared to override the strict restrictions put in place by the hospital during the last few months.

The rules stipulate visits are only allowed if patients have extra caring needs, or if they are receiving end of life care.

But they also state visits from one person would be considered in “exceptional circumstances”.

A source close to Prince Charles said: “The Duke has been in hospital a few days longer than expected and the Prince simply wanted to go and see him.”

A Palace source insisted the Duke’s condition had not changed since he was first admitted.

They said the doctors were simply acting with an “abundance of caution” by keeping him in for further observation.

The Palace said in a statement: “Following consultation with his doctor The Duke of Edinburgh is likely to remain in hospital for observation and rest over the weekend and into next week.

“As we have previously said, the doctor is acting with an abundance of caution. The Duke remains in good spirits.”

The Duke is expected to celebrate his 100th birthday in June 2021.

But amid the Covid-19 pandemic and the Prince’s health, royal fans and onlookers shouldn’t expect a big, public celebration.

On the upcoming occasion, a Palace aide said: “You can’t do something if someone doesn’t want something doing.

“The one person you can guarantee will not want anything to do with it, is the Duke. He’s retired, he’s stepped back, he doesn’t want the fuss. You can’t blame him.”
