The Duke of Edinburgh is expected to spend “several” more days in hospital as he recovers from an infection, Buckingham Palace have said. 99-year-old Prince Philip was admitted to hospital in central London on February 16 after feeling unwell at Windsor Castle. He is currently staying at King Edward VII hospital, where he has been receiving medical attention for an infection, the Palace said. Buckingham Palace also released a statement on Monday saying the Duke has been transferred to St Bartholomew’s Hospital for treatment for an infection, as well as testing and observation for a pre-existing heart condition.

In a statement, they said: “He is comfortable and responding to treatment but is not expected to leave hospital for several days.”

The Duke’s infection is still not coronavirus-related, the Palace staff have confirmed.

Prince Philip’s youngest son, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, revealed on Monday he had spoken to his father on the phone, saying the Duke is “a lot better”.

Prince Edward said: “As far as I’m aware, well I did speak to them the other day, so he’s a lot better thank you very much indeed, and he’s looking forward to getting out, which is the most positive thing.”

The Earl said the family was “keeping our fingers crossed”.

Asked whether the Duke was frustrated to be in hospital, Prince Edward laughed and replied: “Just a bit.

“I think that gets to all of us, and then you can only watch the clock so many times and the walls are only so interesting.

“We have had some brilliant and lovely messages from all sorts of people and we really appreciate that and so does he, I’ve been passing them on. It’s fantastic, thank you.”

At the time of Prince Philip’s hospital admission, the Palace said it was purely “precautionary”.

In sad news, Prince Philip was dealt a bitter blow as he continues to recover from the infection.

The Duke’s friend and former royal page passed away on the very same day he was admitted to King Edward’s hospital.

Speaking on True Royalty TV, royal commentator Robert Jobson revealed the news and said the loss would be felt all the more by the Duke as the royal page was someone he saw every day.

He confirmed: “The other day when Prince Philip went into hospital, his royal page who was with him for many years died on the day the Duke went in.

“That is sad news for the Duke as well, when members of you staff that have been with you on a daily basis, and he is a lot younger than the Duke, when you hear that is it quite difficult.,

“A lot of his friends have passed away, and a lot of his staff have passed away,”

However, this isn’t the first time the Duke, who turns 100 in June, has been admitted to hospital.

Prince Philip was taken in as a “precautionary measure” back in December 2019 as well.

The Duke also underwent a hip replacement operation back in April 2018 – five years after having exploratory surgery on his abdomen.

Among other ailments, the Prince has been plagued by bladder infections and a blocked coronary artery.

He was also taken to hospital following a car crash in January 2019, but again, this was just as a precaution after walking away unscathed.
