Prince Philip was admitted to the private King Edward VII’s Hospital in London on February 16. He was then transferred to St Bartholomew’s Hospital where he underwent a “successful” heart procedure. He has now been moved back to King Edward VII’s.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who will turn 100 in June, was first admitted to King Edward VII’s after feeling unwell at home.

He was treated for an infection before being moved to St Barts on Monday for tests and observation on his heart before he underwent heart surgery on March 3.

The exact reason for his initial admission was not disclosed, but it was not related to coronavirus, officials said.

In a statement on March 5, Buckingham Palace said: “Following The Duke of Edinburgh’s successful procedure at St Bartholomew’s Hospital on Wednesday, His Royal Highness has been transferred to King Edward VII’s Hospital this morning.

“The Duke is expected to remain in hospital for continuing treatment for a number of days.”

On March 3, his daughter-in-law, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall said Philip was “slightly improving” but said he “hurts at moments”.

She added: “We keep our fingers crossed”.

This 20-night hospital stint marks the longest period the Duke will have ever spent in hospital.

This isn’t the first time the Duke’s heart has given the family a scare.

In 2011, Prince Philip suffered chest pains as the royal family was preparing for Christmas.

He was treated for a blocked coronary artery at Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire and had a stent fitted.

Prince Philip, who retired from royal duties in 2017, has received treatment for other health conditions over the years, including a bladder infection in 2012 and exploratory surgery on his abdomen in June 2013.

This latest health scare comes amid an enormously tumultuous time for the Royal Family.

Philip and the Queen’s grandson, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, have delivered an explosive interview about their time as working royals.

Speaking to the US TV host Oprah Winfrey, Meghan and Harry spoke about their relationships with other royals, racism and how their mental health suffered.

However, the couple did say their relationship with the Queen was still good.

Harry said he has a “really good” relationship with his grandmother.

Harry said he has spoken to her more in the last year – including video calls with Archie – than he has for many years.

He said: “She’s my colonel-in-chief, right? She always will be.”

Meghan also praised the Queen and said she gave her some beautiful jewellery for the couple’s first joint engagement together as well as sharing a blanket with her to keep warm while travelling together.

Oprah With Meghan and Harry is on ITV at 9pm on Monday March 8. You can watch the full interview afterwards on the ITV hub.
