Prince Philip fury: How Duke’s brutal letter left Princess Diana devastated

The Duke of Edinburgh was enraged by Andrew Morton’s biography of the princess entitled ‘Diana: Her True Story’, which was published in 1992 and revealed that she was trapped in a loveless marriage. Philip believed Diana had approved the book by allowing her friends and family to be interviewed. He wrote a blistering letter to his daughter-in-law, ordering her to “help maintain the dignity of the Crown”, which left her in bits, according to the paperback version of the biography released later that year.

Diana reportedly told a friend: “That’s it, I’m out.”

Even Prime Minister John Major apparently tried to intervene, warning Diana that he could not organise a respectable departure from public life if she persisted in “milking the media”.

Diana ignored this advice and sent a letter back to her father-in-law, emphasising her role as mother to the heirs to the throne, Prince William and Prince Harry.

The tone of her letter made it clear she was on the brink of leaving her husband.

After this, Philip was said to back down and treat her with more respect.

Diana told a friend: “I wish I’d put my foot down years ago.”

However, tensions did not simmer for long and eventually Philip unleashed an angry tirade at her.

He shouted the Royal Family would be better off without her and issued a final ultimatum: to fit in with the rest of the family and behave herself, or face complete exile, leaving her children behind.

Diana wanted to leave her unhappy marriage, but could not bear to leave the boys, so she stayed with Charles for the time being.

They embarked on yet another royal tour ‒ this time to South Korea ‒ and were nicknamed ‘The Glums’ as press photographers captured the couple looking miserable alongside each other.

Eventually, it was mutually decided they would separate. The announcement came on December 9, 1992.

Diana continued living in Kensington Palace, while Charles retreated to Highgrove House in Gloucestershire.

The Prince and Princess of Wales finally divorced in 1996.

Tragically, just a year later, Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris with her companion Dodi Fayed and their driver Henri Paul.

Prince Philip was equally uncompromising with Sarah Ferguson when she was having difficulties in her marriage to Prince Andrew.

It all started with the infamous toe-sucking fiasco, when pictures of Sarah ‒ affectionately nicknamed Fergie ‒ having her toes sucked by American businessman John Bryan circulated in the press.

The Royal Family were on holiday at Balmoral at the time and, according to reports, Philip marched downstairs with a copy of a newspaper, handed it to Fergie and said: “There but for the grace of God go I.”

Fergie was told to leave Balmoral and from that point on she was essentially banished from the family’s inner circle.

Fergie and Andrew finalised their divorce in 1996, but continued to live together for many years after.

Ever since the scandal, Philip has refused to speak to Fergie, or even be in the same room as her.

Princess Eugenie’s wedding in 2018 was the first time the pair had been pictured together in 26 years, after Philip initially threatened to boycott the occasion.

However, Fergie has remained on good terms with her ex-husband and it is believed she has also made up with the Queen.

Nevertheless, she remains in a strange royal limbo ‒ not quite in, not quite out ‒ and it appears Philip may take the feud to his grave.
