Royal fans were disappointed not to see Prince Philip join other Royal Family members for the Trooping the Colour celebrations on Saturday. The Duke of Edinburgh is only seen occasionally at royal events after retiring from public life in 2017 due to his increasing age and frailty. According to a report from The Telegraph, Prince Philip now operates on a ‘wake up and see how I feel’ basis for royal occasions. Although he attended the wedding of royal relative Lady Gabriella in May, the Duke was absent from the Queen’s official birthday parade and the D-Day commemorations this week.

Prince Philip turns 98 tomorrow – he was born on June 10, 1921.

That means the Duke will be just two years away from celebrating his milestone 100th birthday on Monday.

Every year the Palace sends out thousands of birthday and wedding anniversary cards on behalf of the Queen for significant milestones.

Individuals who reach a century or a 105th birthday receive a personalised message from the Queen in a “special envelope”, according to the Royal website.

This year has already proven memorable for the Duke who was involved in a serious car crash in January.

The 97-year-old’s Land Rover Freelander flipped with him behind the wheel after he pulled out of a junction near to the Sandringham estate and was hit by a car carrying two women and a baby.

Phillip faced criticism soon after for failing to contact the other party involved and for being pictured without a seatbelt while driving days later.

He later apologised and surrendered his driving licence, with the Crown Prosecution Service saying no further action would be taken.

He is still allowed to drive around on the private royal estates, which he continues to do regularly.

The Duke was also seen behind the reigns of a carriage at the Windsor Horse Show in May.

Away from the spotlight, Philip enjoys a quiet life reading, painting and meeting friends.

He welcomed his eighth great-grandchild Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor last month.

An adorable family picture released by Buckingham Palace showed the Duke and Queen smiling at Archie as they met him for the first time at Windsor Castle.

Gun salutes will mark Philip’s birthday in London.

Married to the Queen for more than 71 years, he is the longest-serving consort in history.

Philip is also the oldest serving partner of a reigning monarch.
