Prince Philip, underwent the procedure at St Barts, where he had been transferred earlier this week. Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The Duke of Edinburgh yesterday underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

“His Royal Highness will remain in hospital for treatment, rest and recuperation for a number of days.”

This latest update on Prince Philip’s health has been welcomed by royal watchers.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams wrote on Twitter: “The Iron Duke is fighting back. Wonderful!”

One royal fan said: “That’s very good news! Hopefully he will be 100 percent fine again soon”.

Another wrote: “Poor Prince Philip. Wish him a speedy recovery.”

And a third added: “Get well soon Prince Philip. We need your support for Her Majesty The Queen”.

Prince Philip was admitted to hospital on February 16 after “feeling unwell”, Buckingham Palace said at the time.

The palace did not reveal what the Duke was suffering from, and sources stressed the Duke had been taken to King Edward VII Hospital out of an “abundance of caution”.

The following week, Buckingham Palace provided an update, saying the Duke of Edinburgh was suffering from an infection.

On Monday, 14 days after he was first admitted to hospital, Prince Philip was taken to St Bartholomew’s Hospital for testing and treatment, the palace said.

The statement read: “The Duke of Edinburgh was today transferred from King Edward VII’s Hospital to St Bartholomew’s Hospital where doctors will continue to treat him for an infection, as well as undertake testing and observation for a pre-existing heart condition.

“The Duke remains comfortable and is responding to treatment but is expected to remain in hospital until at least the end of the week.”
