The Prince of Wales title has long held a place in the history of the British monarchy. To date, Prince Charles is the longest-serving Prince of Wales in history. Over the years Charles has gone to great lengths to make the role his own, such as through initiatives like The Prince’s Trust.

What is the Prince of Wales title?

The Prince of Wales title has been in circulation for centuries, and it is reserved for the heir apparent to the British throne.

The title stems back to 1301, when King Edward I gave the title to his son Prince Edward following his conquest of Wales.

Prince Charles was given the Prince of Wales title in 1958, but he was not formally invested in the role until 1969.

The heir apparent does not automatically receive the Prince of Wales title, as it has to be bestowed by the sovereign.

Prince Charles’ investiture as Prince of Wales in the presence of the Queen took place on July 1, 1969 at Caernarfon Castle in Wales.

Charles studied Welsh for a term at Aberystwyth University in preparation for parts of his speech.

Prince Charles is one of many men to have held the Prince of Wales title over the centuries.

The Prince of Wales’ website states: “His Royal Highness is the 21st to hold the title of The Prince of Wales.

“As Prince of Wales, His Royal Highness holds a number of titles.

“The use of these titles and the heraldry associated with them is governed by various rules.

“The Prince is strongly identified with his badge The Prince of Wales’s Feathers, the use of which dates back to the 14th Century and the time of Edward, The Black Prince.”

Who was Prince of Wales before Prince Charles?

The Prince of Wales title was vacant for several years before it was given to Prince Charles.

The last Prince of Wales was Prince Edward, who became King Edward VIII in 1936 following the death of his father King George V.

At the age of 16 Prince Edward was given the Prince of Wales title, seven weeks after his father ascended the throne.

Edward had one of the shortest reigns in royal history, abdicating less than a year after becoming King to marry American divorcee, Wallis Simpson.

After the abdication, Edward’s brother ascended the throne as King George VI.

But George’s daughter Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth II, would not hold the title of Princess of Wales.

The Prince of Wales title can only be given to the male heir apparent.

Therefore Elizabeth was only known as heiress presumptive until she became Queen in 1952.
