Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge have three royal children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. And when the Cambridge children are old enough, they are likely to receive swathes of new royal titles when their father ascends the throne as King.

Often members of the Royal Family will receive a new royal title from the reigning sovereign when they tie the knot.

Prince William was given the royal dukedom of Cambridge by the Queen when he married Kate Middleton in 2011.

Because of William’s title, his youngest child Prince Louis is currently styled as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.

But this royal title could evolve in the future, with one royal expert suggesting Louis could be in line to be the next Duke of Cambridge one day.

Why could Prince Louis get the Duke of Cambridge title?

Traditionally, the second son of the monarch has received the Duke of York title upon marriage in recent centuries.

The current holder of the title is the Queen and Prince Philip’s second son, Prince Andrew.

The Duke of York title has also been held by Prince George and Prince Albert, the future King George V and King George VI, who were both second sons of the reigning monarch.

Royal expert Marlene Koenig explained to Express.co.uk: “[Prince] George became the heir to the throne when his father Edward VII succeeded Victoria.

“He was briefly styled as Duke of Cornwall and York until dad named him as Prince of Wales.

“When he became king in 1910, his peerages reverted to the Crown. In 1920 he created his second son, Albert as Duke of York, the future George VI.

“It was not until 1986 when Elizabeth created her second son as Duke of York. It will revert to the Crown when he dies.”

Prince Andrew is unable to pass the Duke of York title on to his children, as his two daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie cannot inherit the title.

So when the Duke of York title is vacant, it will be up to the reigning monarch to allocate it as they see fit.

But as Ms Koenig pointed out, the Duke of York title is not always reserved for the second son of the monarch, and Louis could instead get the Duke of Cambridge title.

She added: “If William is king when Louis married – and Uncle Andrew is still alive, a good possibility would be Cambridge because that peerage would have reverted to the Crown when William became king.”

What titles will Prince George and Princess Charlotte get?

Prince George is currently third in line to the throne, and as a future King, he might expect to get several new titles over his lifetime.

When Prince William is King, George will be heir apparent and become the Duke of Cornwall, and possibly the Prince of Wales if William decides to allocate the title to him.

Princess Charlotte is likely to be the Princess Royal one day, as she will be the eldest daughter of the sovereign.

The Princess Royal title is currently held by Princess Anne, who is herself the only daughter of the reigning monarch.

The Princess Royal title is life-long, so Charlotte will only be eligible to receive the Princess Royal title when it is vacant after Anne dies.
