Prince Harry, 36, is fiercely proud of his military past and one of his greatest achievements as a working royal was to found the Invictus Games for injured veterans. The international tournament was due to take place in The Hague last year but was pushed back twice due to the pandemic. Now the Invictus Games has confirmed its new date and is due to take place next April.

On Wednesday, the Invictus Foundation tweeted: “SAVE THE DATE: The Invictus Games The Hague 2020

@InvictusGamesNL is now confirmed for April 16 – 22, in 2022!”

While Prince Harry now lives in California with his wife Meghan Markle, 39, and their son Archie Harrison he is expected to leave the USA and travel to Europe for the tournament.

A press release about the event states: “The Invictus Games is an international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans.”

The statement added: “The Games uses the power of sport to drive recovery, support rehabilitation, and generate wider understanding and respect for those who serve or have served their country.

“Since the inaugural Invictus Games in London in 2014, the following Invictus Games have been held in Orlando (2016), Toronto (2017) and Sydney (2018).

“The fifth Invictus Games, which will still be referred to as the Invictus Games The Hague 2020, will thus now be held in The Hague from April 16-22, 2022 with more than 500 participants from 20 countries participating in ten adaptive sports events.

“In the plans, the safety and well-being of the participants always comes first, with a focus on their recovery.”

The announcement will have delighted Prince Harry who recently revealed his first project with Netflix would be a documentary series about the competition.

The Heart of Invictus show will follow a group of competitors from around the globe, all service members who have suffered life-changing injuries or illnesses on their road to the Invictus Games The Hague in 2022.

In a statement about the Netflix show, of which Harry is an executive producer, the Duke said: “This series will give communities around the world a window into the moving and uplifting stories of these competitors on their path to the Netherlands next year.

“As Archewell Productions’ first series with Netflix, in partnership with the Invictus Games Foundation, I couldn’t be more excited for the journey ahead or prouder of the Invictus community for continuously inspiring global healing, human potential and continued service.”

When will Prince Harry return to the UK?

Meghan Markle is currently pregnant with her and Prince Harry’s second child and the couple have confirmed their daughter is due to be born this summer.

While Meghan is not expected to return to the UK any time soon, Harry is due back in Britain for the unveiling of a new statue of his late mother Princess Diana.

Harry and his brother Prince William, 38, commissioned the artwork of their mum which is due to be unveiled in the gardens at Kensington Palace on July 1.

While Harry’s attendance at the event may depend on his baby’s due date he is thought highly unlikely to miss the important reunion.

Harry’s grandfather Prince Philip, 99, is due to celebrate his 100th birthday on June 10 and it was initially thought Harry would travel to Britain to mark the milestone.

But given Meghan’s pregnancy and the pandemic continuing to cause travel disruption it has not been confirmed if he will make it to Philip’s birthday.

The Duke is known to abhor any kind of fuss but there is still expected to be some kind of national recognition of his 100th birthday.
