Prince Harry’s nod to rift with William before meeting Meghan resurfaces

Prince William and Harry reminisce about childhood

The collapse of Prince Harry’s relationship with Prince William was portrayed as the heartbreaking consequence of his marriage to Meghan Markle.

But eagle-eyed royal watchers have now been suggesting the brothers had already shown there were cracks in their bond before Prince Harry even met his future bride.

In a viral TikTok video, shared by more than 40,000 users, the Duke of Sussex appeared to hint at his difficult relationship with the Prince of Wales while they worked together on a special project to mark their late grandmother’s hard work.

The two brothers sat together to view and comment on some childhood memories, with a clip taken from the home video of Harry’s christening attracting the attention of royal watchers.

During their exchange, Harry seemingly teased Prince William about his excitement about having a younger brother not lasting very long.

Having grown up in public, William and Harry gave the impression of being very close before the latter’s marriage to the Duchess of Sussex, often working together to promote causes they both care for.

The Duke of Sussex, however, pushed back on “this idea that somehow my wife was the one that destroyed the relationship between these two brothers” in his book Spare.

And the clip from Elizabeth at 90: A Family Tribute casts doubts on the closeness the brothers shared before Harry even met Meghan Markle.

The video shows the pair’s late mother Princess Diana holding Prince Harry while Prince William runs along the corridors of Buckingham Palace.

Harry asked William: “Do you remember your little brother being born?”

To which the Prince of Wales bluntly replied: “Not really. I must have been two.”

William can also be seen teasing his younger brother for his Christening gown: “It’s hard to tell whether you’re a boy or a girl in that dress.”

Harry said: “Thank you. I think that normally happens at that stage of your life, you don’t really have much of a decision over what you’re wearing.”

He then commented on his brother playing around, adding: “Look how excited you are, you’ve got a younger brother.”

And in an aside previously interpreted as a joke between the brothers, the Duke added: “Didn’t last long did it.”

In his memoir earlier this year, Harry claimed he was warned to keep his distance from William when he joined William at Eton.

He wrote: “Willy told me to pretend I didn’t know him. ‘What?’ ‘You don’t know me, Harold. And I don’t know you.'”

But later in the book, the Duke offered a different portrayal of his relationship with his older brother.

Reminiscing about the day William married Kate, the Princess of Wales, Harry described his deep feelings of loss for what he described as a seemingly cherished friend and companion.

Harry wrote: “The brother I’d escorted into Westminster Abbey that morning was gone—forever.

“Who could deny it? He’d never again be first and foremost Willy. We’d never again ride together across the Lesotho countryside with capes blowing behind us.

“We’d never again share a horsey-smelling cottage while learning to fly. Who shall separate us? Life, that’s who.”

And during an interview with 60 Minutes while promoting his autobiography, the Duke insisted he “love him deeply” despite the “pain” between them.

Asked about his relationship with William, Harry said: “My brother and I love each other. I love him deeply. There has been a lot of pain between the two of us, especially the last six years.

“None of anything that I’ve written, anything I’ve included is ever intended to hurt my family.

“But it does give a full picture of the situation as we were growing up, and also squashes this idea that somehow my wife was the one that destroyed the relationship between these two brothers.”
